Coach Mainieri says LSU fans will hate the new "dead" bats

At tonight's Coaches Committee meeting, Paul Mainieri said the new, NCAA mandated deadened bats are going to almost take away the home run.
For example, he said in previous years during batting practice, the team would average between 15-20 home runs. Now it is rare for the team to hit more than two home runs during BP.
Because of that, the team is concentrating on speed and bunting. He said we won't be seeing very many of those 15-12 games.
He said he's pleased with the team's progress in fall practice. He specifically mentioned new guys Jimmy Dykstra (pitcher), Ty Ross (catcher) and Kevin Gausman (pitcher).
He asked those attending the meeting to write any suggestion which would make their experience at the Box more enjoyable. He then read the suggestions to the audience.
The most frequent suggestion given, by a wide margin, was to add a radar gun display of the pitch speed on the scoreboard. He asked the members to vote by a show of hands if they wanted that idea implemented and the response was almost unanimous yes.
He said he would like to see it done also and he would revisit that issue with the athletic department administration.

i'm very familiar with Easton bats (LSU's bat sponser), but have never heard of 'deadened' bats... can someone elaborate please?

Talked to some ULM baseball players who were tailgaiting with us. They said pretty much the same thing CPM said. Also said that they would rather use wood than the new bats.
Don't see the point in changing the bats again. It was not gorilla ball anymore, but still exciting.

shite...just take out all the damn trees and make the switch to wood. At least the ball carries off the wood.

The NCAA, in its lack of wisdom, has decreed that the metal bats used in college must meet new standards which make them almost like wood bats.
I don't know why. Neither does Mainieri. He thinks it will affect fan interest even if it does speed up games due to fewer hits and pitching changes.

I should beat you to death with one of these stupid dead bats if you start another baseball thread before a big LSU football game again.

ETA: Besides how many "Fire Les Miles", "Fire Gary Crowton", "Start J. Lee", "Bench J. Jefferson" and "SEC Refs suck" threads do you need to read before you think you know everything you need to know about the upcoming football game?

This and think of the number of wooden bats that would be required if collegiate baseball made the change.
That is a lot of friggin' bats.

I read about this last year when they discussed the changes to the bats. The primary reason is the exit speed off the old bats and specifically the safety of the pitchers.

I look for small ball teams to make a deep run into the tourney.
Should help my Titans, but hurt my Tigers!

Russian, I went to the scrimmage last friday and the difference in the bats was apparent immediately. The first thing people will notice is the sound of the ball off of the bat. No longer a "ping", but a totally different sound--like a ball hitting hard plastic or ceramic. The outfielders were playing several feet closer in than in the past. A ball did not come close to leaving The Box during the scrimmage. It is gonna change the game for sure.

why did they change bats in the first place again?

Imagine what Louis Coleman's numbers would have looked like if these bats were around two years ago. As a fly ball/strikeout pitcher, home runs were pretty much the only thing that ever hurt him his senior year. Would have been like Ranaudo's numbers in the cape this year.
