Just watched this the other night and thought they did a good job. It was funny to see the old clips from high school games being played in Memorial stadium. Only difference from then and now seems to be they took the bleachers out.

It was interesting to see that after serving his time he really didn't want to do much and was content to slip into obscurity, but eventually found the motivation to get back out in the public. Getting to work at Angola really gave him a new purpose.

Billy was before my time so I didn't know much about him until I read a few online articles about him a few years back.

He was an athletic freak. Going off memory but I think he:
- Was clocked at 9.4s 100 yd dash
- Won the SEC 100 yd dash
- Won the SEC shot put
- Was gonna compete in the Olympics in weightlifting
- Was great in the AFL at RB until an injury. Then played well at TE.

Full-grown man.

Billy was embarrassed for what he did and did not want to face his old friends; much less be around LSU. Fellow dentists in Baton Rouge sabotaged his practice.

Angola saved Billy's life and he is 100% responsible for the change in medical/dental services provided to inmates. Billy resonated with the inmates because he to was a prisoner of his own doings. He wanted the inmates to have a purpose and feel appreciated which is why he asked several to work with him in the dental facility at Angola.

It was a very good production

He was my orthodontist in the 70’s. Years later, I had a chance to chat with him at some of the Baton Rouge Spring Luncheons. He missed one year because of his stroke, and the next year I was talking to him and mentioned how good he looked (after recovering from a stroke). He said son, don’t lie to me, I have mirrors in my house. And he wasn’t smiling lol.

Coach Paul Deitzel always said that the most remarkable thing about that game, his punt return against the Rebels, was that he played both ways all during the game. He said that the humidity that nite was off the charts & everyone was sucking air. There is a picture of him, post run, sitting on the bench, oxygen mask to face & you can see him sucking air long & hard. That he teamed with QB Warren Rabb to make the game saving tackle, 4 times, inside the 5 yard line with minutes left in the game is, seldom mentioned.

The inmates at Angola made the coffin that he was laid to rest in. They paid for the materials themselves. That should tell you how much they thought of him and the work he did there. That part made me feel like someone was chopping onions. A good man who made a mistake, paid his dues and turned his life around. It was an excellent show.

Cannon was an absolute unit. He was basically a modern day athlete placed in the 50s/60s

You give him today’s training and nutrition he would have been even more unreal
