If Billy Beane was a college GM he would love a player like Chris Reid. Gets on base and would be cheap on the open market (scholarship needed) because he has a lot of “flaws” and doesn’t pass the eye test. Slaughter looks the part and it’s pretty in batting practice but it has not yet translated to games.

Know who else has a ton of hard hit balls? Brandt Broussard.
Broussard's highest exit velocity is in the low 100s. Slaughter has had several in the 114 mph range. That is significantly higher

Just so we're clear, you agree that how hard someone hits the ball is relevant to their power as a hitter? If you agree with that, there is nothing more that needs to be done here. If you don't agree with that, I'm not sure anything CAN be done here.

It is relevant but its only modestly useful without launch angle
see: Brandt Broussard

Thanks, that's all I needed.

Maybe we should get Slaughter a pair of glasses like Reid’s got. He seems to be squinting quite a bit out there.
It's going to look really bad if he gets surgery this August and then "figures it out" like Dwanye Bowe in 2005.

I wish that were provided more. It doesn't even look like they tweeted out the HR graphic on Saturday for Slaughter, so that info isn't available.
And the other one he hit was at SELU. You could tell off the bat that he hit it a mile though.

I would be (and am) wondering why it wasn't addressed already.
I also think Slaughter was done a disservice by going to the Cape last summer. He didn't play every day, and when he did it was rarely at 3rd base. He could have done like Deichmann and gone to the Northwoods league to get more games in.

Absolutely agree

the low-end threshold for a HR is like 91mph. Broussard hits a ton of balls with enough MPH to be homeruns. Launch angle is equally important especially when you are talking HRs.

Can Reid score from 2nd on a single?

Probably not on any of those.
He already has this year moron

and I expect Broussard to hit a few this season. When you make solid contact as much as he does, and can hit the ball as hard as he can, he should inevitably hit some home runs.

and I don't disagree with that.

I think he has once, on Sunday when he was running on contact with 2 outs on a ball that was hit fairly deeply to center field by Watson. There wasn't even a throw to the plate. You know exactly what I meant by that post. He has done it once all season. Every other run he's scored has been from third base or on an extra base hit. No need to argue like my mother... because something has happened before that, generally speaking, it doesn't.

I agree. I am happy to see him get playing time, because he has been more clutch than other players that got the nod ahead of him. All along, he kept a good attitude and was a team player.
Good job, Chris!

Post his batting average

Reid has done really well so far, the biggest problem being a singles hitter is you are very dependent on speed a lot of times and he just doesnt have any. I would expect his average to drop by a lot over SEC play, but continue to get on base because somehow the dude just sees a ton of balls towards the bottom of the lineup. Maybe too because he is no threat to steal or score from 1st most of time on a double by someone else. Also struggle to score from 2nd on a single due to speed sometimes.
You do know that Reid hit .337 in SEC play his freshman year right? That was second on the team behind Kramer who hit .363.
Slaughter, on the other hand, hit .184 during SEC play last year.
Posted on 3/19/18 at 3:18 pm to Howyouluhdat
My point was that his speed is a factor in fewer runs scored. Not that he “couldn’t score runs”.

He was also batting in between Bryce Jordan and Cole Freeman. Reid had about as much protection as you'd ever expect to get for a typical 8 hole hitter. It really comes down to this...Reid wasn't on the bench all last year for no reason. No one is saying that aren't appreciative for what he's done. He's done what has been asked of him and he does the little he's good at well and consistently. The issue is he has one average tool of the 5 major tools. He is below average in power, speed, arm strength, and fielding. He gets the absolute most from his ability to hit singles and work counts to get on base, and he deserves plenty of credit for accepting his role and making the most of his opportunities. But if Reid is still starting once Josh Smith is healthy, then we have more problems as a team because that means Hughs and Slaughter are still struggling. We need both of these players to play well if we have any postseason aspirations.
