re: Chavis quietly pushed out the door?

LSU what they had to pony up to keep Chief days ago and chose not to. For CLM to be shocked is nonsense.
From a pure coaching profession standpoint, Chief did what was best for him. He probably needed a change in scenery as well, and an extra mill for retirement goes a long way.

Absurd.
COUNTING Texas A&M, Chavis has had five employers in 35 years. He's had two in the past 26 years.

The irony is that I don't think that Sumlin is any more solid of a coach than CLM. I wonder how the age difference will play out there. On the other hand, maybe Sumlin will just let him be. Chief is cashing in and realistically why not. LSU Nation cannot fault him for taking way more green. It's not like he's angling to be a HC again.

I don't think this is obvious, just speculation on your part

MetTiger -- good post and analysis. I agree Chavis was good, but our 2012 and 2014 losses to Bama are on the Defense. Our 2013 loss to UGA is on the defense.
Chavis is a good coach... but we can hire a DC to replace him and if we get a top recruiter in the same person... we're actually better off.
Whether he wore out his welcome, I don't know -- but losing him is NOT the end of the world.
I just hope Brick doesn't leave with him -- which is the latest "story".

Chavis is bringing a defense to a team that can put up insane offensive numbers CONSISTENTLY. Now ATM will have a complete team. LSU consistently had a defense outside of last year with the exodus of players to blame. Chief sees the joke of an offense that LSU usually has and knows he will be a part of a "new" organization that will now compete for championships every year like BAMA. Chief is being rewarded for being one of the best. LSU is going old school Michigan and saying here's what we want to pay. Take it or move along because coaches are beating down the door to coach here.
Chief saw his Defense wasted on that crap on 1/9.....You sunshine pumpers think Les has it all under control? Now watch what happens to this team without a defense to go with the worthless offenses......
This is the decline right here.....LSU just dropped to 4 or 5th in the West on a yearly basis unless they can find another Chavis.

les cant even get rid of Anthony Jennings from being the starting quarterback do you really think he pushed chavis to leave cmon man

Alleva is a jackass, but he's not going to lie about a $4,000,000 deal that doesn't exist. Alleva didn't want to handcuff a new HC with Chavis, Chavis didn't want to be handcuffed by Miles. At the end, neither would budge, so Chavis moved on.
The simplest explanation is usually the correct one

That's where I stopped reading.

Exactly.

FWIW, I just spoke to one of the few "insiders" i know. From what I'm told there's a reason Miles didn't fight harder to keep him. I didn't get all the details but it was time to move on.
I also know who is on our short list. If option #1 comes through e'rbody will be LOL'ing, high fives and freaking out. Frankly I think #1 is a long shot. If option 2 or 3 happen, it will probably spell the end for Miles in the next 2-3 years. I'm hoping the list gets expanded. Pendergast is not on the short list FYI.

LOL, frankly I don't really know what CLM does, other than spur head scratcher sales. But seriously, I'm guessing that Chavis and Miles at some point had words this year. Maybe Chavis said "Hey, maybe you ought to play Harris so my guys can get off the field to catch their wind"
LSU football is slowly becoming the Twilight Zone, a bizarro world of WTF?

not sure I agree here. You think he has 100% confidence in Sumlin being there? I mean, A&M will want to run his arse out of town soon....

no, nor did I say that (or intend to) -- what I said is that Chavis was good, but not invinceble.
He couldn't beat Florida with Peyton Manning at QB. We couldn't beat Bama in 2012 or 2014 because the defense failed at the critical time in the game.... and if Bo Wallace wasn't a dumb arse we may have lost to OM this year due to the defense being unable to make a stop at the end.
Chavis is good, but replaceable in my opinion.

Say what you want, but players and parents love LM. Chavis's D has cost us many late games, even last year with two thousand yard receivers, Mett, and Hill, etc. just need a good DC hire and a change in Qb and watch out. Look at all the talent. Any good DC possibility can see that.

Chavis was fired from Tennessee. He's been overrated, I believe.
We can get an equal or better replacement. But we're relying on Miles to make the hire. I'm not real confident.

DC very important. QB issue is #1

Chavis doesn't recruit much...UT had to leave the state to get their recruits and as Fullmer fell off the map, so did their progress. He was let go. Now he's about to become the highest paid assistant in the country and you say we can get equal or better? If so, why didn't Sumlin go grab this "candidate" that is out there for LSU? Where do you think LSU would be in the rankings the last 5 years without Chavis' defenses?
I hope we can find someone else....if not, gonna be a long ride down to the bottom over the next couple of years.
