Can someone please explain which features of Mike's habitat were changed and why?

"Before & After" photos would be helpful.

Of course and I'm in favor.

I'm more curious to understand why from a veterinarian's point of view. What thought went into adding specific features? Has new tiger habitat research recommended certain features like a raised rock platform or a cave? If so, why? I want the knowledge!

Here ya go:

quote:

The addition most likely to please both Mike and his fans is a roughly 100-square-foot synthetic rock that uses glycol to stay cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather

quote:

Speaking of above, the central support column that holds up the netting over the habitat has been redesigned to look like a tree, creating a more pleasing aesthetic

quote:

The pond and waterfall also have been refurbished. Longer-lasting LED lights have replaced older light bulbs that went out more often and were difficult to change. Ground lights have been taken out, replaced by LED lights on the faux tree for much the same reason

quote:

The inside of Mike’s night house has been coated with a heavy-duty epoxy flooring to make it easier to clean. The coating has a texture designed to keep Mike from slipping when it’s wet, but one not so abrasive that it wears at his foot pads.

With the improvements, our status is elevated from an "accredited tiger habitat " to an "accredited tiger sanctuary," which is considered the highest level of care and commitment in the opinion of the global animal rights group that gives out such accreditations.

It should shut up the PETA people for a little while longer.

PETA isn't concerned about Mike's habitat at any level of accreditation. PETA doesn't want LSU to have a tiger in captivity. PETA believes mike should be free.
Hint don't worry about PETA they will never be satisfied. It's about emotion not rational thought.

PETA thinks the most "humane" thing to do with Mike is to put him down because he would no longer be able to survive in the wild. Better to kill him than have a University throw millions of dollars into making him comfortable and taking care of his every need.

I would like to see a pig tossed in there for Mike VII to be able to chase and grab a live meal!
