Have #1 get a bye

#2 and #3 play for the right to play #1.

Eliminates Oklahoma from bitching every year to make the playoffs only to get blown out.

Everybody wins! Even OU, which gets a decent bowl game they maybe can win.

Make it 6. #1 and #2 get a bye.

This year proved 4 at max. Most years there won’t be 4 teams that deserve a playoff spot. The disparity between 1-3 and 4 was very evident this year. See OU getting waxed every year in the playoffs for more reasoning on not expanding.

Tie in 6 bowls and make it 8.

No byes. Sorry but in college I see byes more often than not bring a slow start for a team. Everyone plays.

• 8 team playoff (5 Power 5 conference winners & 3 at-large teams)
• 1-4 hosts the 1st round and maybe even the 2nd round too because of how expensive it is for fans to travel to 2 playoff games over a 2 week span.
• NC at a neutral site obviously.

So what if there are some lopsided 1st round matchups. There are (4)#1 seeds that play #16 seeds in basketball and no one has a problem with those.

This year proved that conference championships are overrated, if not completely irrelevant, when picking the teams. Ironically, going to 6 or 8 teams this year would have yielded better matchups. The real problem is that Oklahoma is not even close to the 4th best team. A 4 seed Oklahoma loses to the 5th best team in the country, and I would argue probably loses to several of the next 4 or 5 teams.

By going to 6 or 8 teams, the 4 that advance are far more likely to be the best 4 teams, thus creating better semifinal matchups. Admittedly, if you go to 8, you would likely have some ugly quarterfinal matchups, but teams that have no business being in the semifinals (see OU and Notre Dame), but were selected due to strong win/loss records due to soft schedules, would be eliminated in the first round.

Hasn't the #2 and #4 team won it all every year prior to this one?

8 is the only way to go. Most comprehensive format here...
