Incidental contact from two people moving in opposite directions is not a penalty. He led with his shoulder. It was incredibly clear on the new HD screen in the NEZ.

If it had been an Arky defender doing the same thing to LaFell I still would say no penalty. It wasn't.

Plus thats almost a game changing call. Just doesnt seem right to call that there. Like calling a foul with 1 second left in a basketball game on a ticky tack play. You just dont do it.

Any player in the act of catching a pass is deemed defenseless.

Both hits were what football is all about...they might as well put flags on these guys now b/c it's starting to turn into girly ball. No flags should have been thrown on either LaTech or CJ hits.

When you are running full speed at a guy and your goal is to keep them from catching a pass, how in the hell can you control EXACTLY where and how you hit them, esp when the other guy is moving too?

You are correct.

Rule 9-1-3b
quote:

No player shall initiate contact and target a defenseless opponent above the shoulders. When in question, it is a foul.

So where was contact initiated above the shoulder on CJ's hit?

If you take away the ability of the defensive player to jar the TD pass loose with a hard hit, you fundamentally change the game. You might as well take away their pads and cleats and give them ballet shoes.

Hard hits are a part of football. They are a big part of good defensive football.

I don't think the hit on TT was illegal IMO. According to NCAA I guess it is but it's part of the game. Just let them play. It's a violent game and violent hits occur. Let them play. You can't protect every body from every thing.

Once again. It does not matter if CJ used his helmet

What part of "he did not lead with his helmet" do you not understand? CJ lead with his shoulder, hit the receiver in the shoulder and it was a violent collision. Please look at all the replays and you will see, if you want to see. Otherwise keep beating a dead mule but it was a poor called made late because the Arky receivers helment came off from the collision and he was suddenly going the other direction.

Jeez, how about hitting somewhere below the head? What a complex solution!

He did. Shoulder-to-shoulder. Helmets bumped afterward.

According to the rule, both are illegal. Neither should be.

But there is NO reason to call them differently.
