what do you expect from a white boy. I guess you're pissed he didn't win the Heisman too!

I was only four(4) at the time. On the radio he ran from right to left, as I recall. By the time I was in the second grade, I was able to touch his Heisman at Charlie Hennigan's camp touchdown in Bryceland, LA.

I was there, too. It is hard to compare Billy's speed to today. The tracks and equipment are so different. Billy trained at Alvin Roys with Jimmy Taylor. Not many players did that back then. In the summers they had to work like real work. Billy was the fastest player that anyone had ever seen. He always ran as fast up the middle as around end. Awesome. Purvis and Daye had track speed, too. Coach did not allow many players to miss Spring Ball for track. Football was THE SPORT!Billy did win the SEC 100 yd dash and the Shot putt. I always thought he ran a 9.4 at the meet. He could run just as fast in full football armor. Strong as a bull. We need to get Boots Garland on here. He has some great speed stories. Billy was very large for his era. Some of the players played most of the game...both ways. They had to be in shape and strong. Billy was also an excellent student. He was a rare breed.

A friend of mine's father played on that team.

Cannon played both ways that night, so he was probably a bit tired by the end of the fourth quarter. He also made the stop on 4th down at the goal line at the very end of the game to preserve the victory, which is a fact most LSU fans are unaware of.

A story from Billy's Istrouma high school days from one of his classmates: He was barreling down the field with one skinny defender between him and the goal. Billy stopped right in front of the guy, the defender rocked back on his heels for a split second. Then Billy ran right over him and scored the TD.

"Why?"
To run OVER the guy.
To run OVER the guy.

Yeah I got it, but why'd he do something like that?

'Cause he was Billy I'm going to run over you Cannon. Attitude.

That's the way the game was played. You did not run for the sideline or slide down, and you stiff armed, not juked. The really good backs ran like ridley...lower your shoulder and bull yourself over them. That was real football.

Real Football was stopping dead stride, just to run over a a 1950's 150 lbs DB?

You guys gotta remember that in those days you were on the field a lot more. Much less substitution. In the 4th quarter everyone was slower.
This. He went both ways, didn't he? This was before the platoon (Go, White, Chinese Bandits)?

In high school Cannon ran the 100 yard dash in u8nder 10 seconds, several times.

Yeah...but was Cannon faster that Forrest Gump ?

LOL, Looks like some of you just can't believe how good Cannon really was, you just can't admit that he would STILL be better than most players today. Trust us, some who SAW him still can't believe it ! LOL. He WAS that good, believe it or not.

A 9.4 at 100 yards translates to about 10.1 100 meters.

Why can't you just admit he was on fast dude ? Fastest guy in all the SEC ! AND also one of the strongest. Won 100 and the shot at SEC championships ON THE SAME DAMN DAY ! Think about that.
Also played Offense, defense and special teams. DUDE didn't come off the field but for a few plays all game.

And I am sure that all of these that are unbelieving of Cannon played football themselves.
Maybe they don't believe that Butkus could play today either.
Cannon would no doubt start today as would Tommy Casanova as would Bert Jones.
