Because the only being to ever run a 9.6 100 or below is Usain Bolt.

Usain Bolt ran it in 100 meters; Cannon was timed in 100 yards at 9.5.

100 yards my man, not 100 meters of today.

Ah, Otto used just 100, so I assumed it was 100 meters. Even then, I seriously doubt he ran a 9.6 100 yards. The conversion (10.37 100 meters) would be just .2 short of the World Record in 1959 (10.1).

The 100 yard dash record in 1961 was 9.3, so I doubt Cannon was every clocked at a 9.3 in the 1950s.

COLLEGE CAREER
Even by modern standards, Billy Cannon was a rare athlete, combining sprinter speed with brute strength ... Cannon could consistently run a 9.5 in the 100-yard dash and, at 6-1, 210 pounds, he had the size to overpower his opponents as well as outrun them

Remember, Cannon is white and wasn't recruited by Saban. So, a lot of younger people assume he really couldn't be any good.

Saw him in a track meet in 1958 or 1959 at Northeast Louisiana State College (U-LM) and he tied one of the Styron twins (Don or Dave, identical twins from Colorado), one was a hurdler and the other 100 yard dash. Cannon tied him in something like 9.6 seconds. Styron weighed about 40 pounds less than Cannon.

I'm sure he was awesome and fast as shite. I just have a tough time believing he was running near Olympic-like times. I can't find any actual times results on the internet.

A bit more info

An extraordinary athlete in the mid-20th Century, the legend lives on about Cannon winning a sprint in record time at the SEC Track Championships. He then walked across the field to win the shot put event.

I watched Cannon’s run from the Press Box. He went from South to North running along the East sideline (Ole Miss).

The Press Box has always been on the West side.

As far as Cannon’s speed: it was always enough. His 100 yard time was virtually the same in football uniform or shorts, cleats or track shoes.

If you would look at the opposing teams bench as he ran the punt back there would be no question in your mind he was going south to north. LSU team has always sat on the west side.

He didn't lose weight for track, because he threw too, so it would have been "chasing the needle" so to speak, plus he needed the weight for football. An otherwise unattributed track coach famously quipped he could lose 15 (and I hear this sometimes as 20) pounds and win the 100 in the Olympics or gain 15 (again, sometimes 20) pounds and win the shot put at the Olympics.

It may have been an exaggeration, but he was a legitimate track and field star. He also had football speed, and as others have said, he was reportedley very consistent in his times, cleats, sneakers, etc. (Like the story about Trindon running a 4.4 40 in basketball shoes.. fast is fast.)

The only person who said "Olympic-like numbers" was Antonio Moss.

Cannon ran 100 yards in 9.5 seconds; coverted to 100 meters, it is 10.39.

That's a fact. You make your own judgment.

10.39 is not setting the world on fire, but it isn't much slower than many skill players in the SEC today.

Also, take into account the better training and workouts these guys today have and Cannon would've been every bit as good as our skill players today.

You guys gotta remember that in those days you were on the field a lot more. Much less substitution. In the 4th quarter everyone was slower.

Yea, Tulane has provided so many outstanding athletes over the years. Maybe one of Ned Fowler's runners in '85 during the point shaving scandal could run a 9.5.

Someone earlier said that he ran a 9.3 in the 100 yards. That would have been the world record at the time (9.3 became the world record in 1961).

Cannon was obviously superfast, but you have to think that in the age before digital times, he may have gotten a little bump on the hand timed 100s.

Cannon used to run the 100 meters in close to 10 seconds flat...

I would guess players were slower back then, but also, they played Iron man football Cannon played offense and defense, and may have been tired but definitley had speed to burn...

By all accounts Cannon was a track star at lsu as well, if your a true tiger fan you should already know this...

Did anyone have speed back then...

trust me those guys would've caught you buddy

actually 10.39 is fast as hell, and the average sec skill player does not run close to that fast... Mo Claiborne is our starting corner ran 10.7 in h.s, and Reggie Bush ran a 10.4...
Devery Henderson's best times were 10.3's and Eddie Kennison ran a 10.2 at best...

There's a reason people talk about how fast Cannon was, 10.39 is faassstttt!
