LSUs DL recruiting up until 2 years ago was well below sec level. The last 2years has been much better but they are freshmen and Sophs and need to grow stronger and need more maturity. They need to bring in at least 2 down linemen and 2ends from the portal.

I have no problem with anyone on the defense, if the new coach wants to keep them, ok with me.

Plus, he didn't recruit any of the DT now playing at his position of responsibility.

This right here I think should buy him a chance with the next staff. D-Line has improved but still not where we need it. I think his coaching has definitely led to that improvement but is the limited improvement due to his ceiling as a coach, limited talent level of players that weren’t his, or combination of both. Being who he is and his history with LSU, I would be willing to give him more time to find out.

Not getting consistent pass rush from our DL is a huge weakness for this team.
Our DE’s have a combined 3.5 sacks this year- that’s horrendously awful since we are in November. That may be the worst in all of college football.
Because of that- we have to blitz almost every down: imagine this D if we could keep people back in coverage

It at least we can stop the run now. Something by we hadn’t been able to do in a few years.

I really think that you people need to understand that players make plays. I’m not making excuses for any of these coaches, but they know how to coach football. I don’t think we have the team that we thought we did. That’s my opinion.

I agree but it really doesn’t matter what you or “we” think. A New Coach brings his own people. That being said, I would think we have to hire an Offensive minded Guru, who would focus on an Offensive overhaul we need and not drastically change the Defense. Our Defense is stout and I think only gave up points due to Always being on the field and becoming exhausted.

I will let new coach decide if he stays or not. He doesn't NEED to stay

and that he needs to stay at LSU ?

That should be up to the new coach. No head coach likes to be told whom to retain.

I agree with you and think that this lack of production from DE this year is really a major reason why our D hasn't been better....probably more so than any other position. The reason is because effective DE play, whether a sack or just a pressure or just turn the QB in a direction he doesn't want to go, or just keep the play from breaking outside containment....all of these things were missing this year. And the lack thereof makes the db, safety jobs that much harder. I just recall all the major hype these guys had, especially Pyburn and Peyton, and there work this year can't be characterized as anything but below average at best.
LSU had a lot of major NIL disappointments this year, and I lay that all on the coaching staff for poor evaluation and coaching.,...but we all know that now.

Unpopular opinion - Baker and the defensive staff should get more time and get "their" players in. I believe there's alot of upside in what we have here and we've shopped for some talent, we just need some key pieces. If we were to let him go, we'd be letting go of one of the top in-demand coordinators in college FB. Used to be a rule of thumb that if you could hold an offense to 13 points, your offense should be able to win the game. In today's evolution, 20 points seems to be the threshold and the defense has (with a couple big exceptions) met that requirement. Another year should see improvement.

Case in point - everybody fondly remembers Bill Parcell's 3-4 defenses, but they only worked if, when, and because he had the right personnel - big, big guys with certain skill sets playing in the front 7-8, specifically OLB and DE.

Obviously, we aren't currently running a 3-4 and I'm not advocating one way or the other - just that personnel matters and I would like to see what happens.

Just to be clear, I am not suggesting that Baker be removed. LSU can and has done much. much worse. He and stafff need to step up their player evaluation though. Our 4-5 star transfers played like 2-3 star transfers, except for Hallcy and Delane

He coaches interior lineman. I would hazard a guess that most of the breakdowns come from outside contain
