If it was a RUN call why send out 2 TE set on a short yardage 3rd down?

Am I missing something?

It’s very common to have two TEs in the game, and often they run the ball with that, so I don’t understand your point.

Without any context it’s hard to know if this is just in general or are you referring to the play where Pimpton missed his block and Emery was tackled immediately? If so it’s because they just ran a pass out of that formation and went hurry up which means that you keep the same players in. But in theory you wouldn’t mind running out of a two tight set because typically tightends are better than most wide receivers at run blocking.

Yes. Basic math.

7 > 6

It’s better to have 7 big guys on the line to block than 6.

yes it is common to have 2 TE's but i associated that more with throwing the ball as it gives QB options to change the play if he sees certain formation.

I would rather have a OL to help set the edge and open gaps or even block on the second level.

How is TE better than OL in short yardage when it is critical to convert that 3rd down??

Because the second one replaces a 180 lb WR.

Also, the first one can catch just about anything thrown his way but couldn't block my slow 57 yr old arse.

You can’t throw a pass to an OL (unless he reports as an eligible receiver, but most of them have hands of stone). The defense knows that. If there are two TE, they have to also be wary of the pass.

LSU would have had to sub out Pimpton for an extra OL and USC would've been able to sub and get whoever they want on the field. It would've been obvious that LSU was running. With 12 personnel you can sell the pass.

Yes,

If they know what they are doing, the two Te set can keep a defense honest.

There is more to it but that is a good starting point.

Not when it attracts more defenders to the box and those TEs can’t block well

TE being used as basically extra WR is a relatively new thing.

FWIW Pimpton had been blocking well before that play. There was a play earlier in the game where he took out two USC defenders simultaneously.
