I thought LSU would want a top coach this time. Fickell is not in that tip list.

True, but Ryan Day isn't leaving for any other College job and he is doing well so his job is safe.

I don't think the OSU job will be open for a while.

You can’t not hire a guy because you think he might take some other job.

Exactly.
There are only a handful of Blue Blood jobs that are better jobs than LSU and those schools wouldn't try to lure Fickell from LSU unless he was winning big at LSU.

Otherwise just keep Coach O because I don't think you have to worry about the Blue Bloods stealing him.
Or only hire LSU alums so you don't have to worry about them leaving for home when they have the chance.

I don’t see a coach named Luke Fickell having any kind of sustained success anywhere

True.
Fickell has Cincinnati ranked 5th.
Fickell is something like 36-5 in his last 41 games at UC.
Beat Notre Dame and Indiana on the road.
Did all of this with a bunch of 2 and 3 star players.
Imagine what he would do with 4 and 5 star talent.

If a guy named Dabo can win a championship, I think a guy named Luke can win one

The key is, does Luke Fickell want to win a national championship?

Luke and I are FB friends and I asked him this very thing. Want to know what he told me? "I have no interest at all in winning a Natty."

Who knew?

I remember when Sabin's name came up (year 1999), the only star he had to his name was his bringing back Michigan State to prominence. Not a lot different than Fickell. Don't think Sabin had been much at all out of the midwest, either. I'm not saying Fickell's the guy, understand. I remember Emmert going to friends who knew football and asking who is the best coach. They are the ones who said Sabin, if you can get him. The AD, Dean, had been told to get out of the way because he continued to support DiNardo long after support collapsed, like now for Orgeron. An open mind is the single most valuable possession in a coaching search.

No doubt Fickell’s done a nice job, but Cincinnati was already a pretty good program before he got there. The coaches that preceded him all did well enough to leave for bigger CFB jobs except Tuberville.

Mark Dantonio
Brian Kelly
Butch Jones
Tommy Tuberville

I think they won like 5 Big East Championships in the 10 seasons before he got there amd went to maybe 9 bowls in 11 years. Hell, I think Kelly has them at #3 in the BCS 1 year after the regular season. Not to downplay the job Fickell’s done, just that he didn’t turn around some doormat. Cincinnati has had a nice and successful program for a while now.
