I watched the play last night where he got burned, and it was obvious when it happened (and it's probably what happened in the Bama game, and others).

He was 2-3 yds deeper than the WR, when he was still in backpedal. He didn't get turned around, he didn't stumble. He seemed to see the play well.
When he turned his hips to run with the WR, he turned the correct direction.

But he gave up maybe 5-6 yds during that turn, the WR shot past him and got 2-3 yds behind him. And it didn't seem like the WR put on a burst, it just seemed like when Flott turned, he lost all speed for a half second.

Is that something that can be fixed with better technique, or is he just toast anytime someone runs a go route, and we need someone better?

This isn't a flame, I'm curious. I've seen other guys who make that turn and fall directly into step with the WR, which I assume is supposed to be the case.

Yes with with better pass rush and help over the top when matched against the fastest guy on the other team. But over the top help should be constant.

His wheelhouse is defending the quick slants and crossers (see how good he looked vs TAMU) Gets beat over the top too much but our safeties have also been really bad

Yes and so can Clark. Neither have quit on us so I’m rooting for both of them

College refs allow some contact, and contact is the salvation when a DB is reacting to a change in the route. Flott is too light to thrive with contact; it will be he who is knocked off track, similar to the way Chase always came out of contact as the clear winner.

Flott has to get bigger. Ditto Ward. If they can’t do it naturally they need to look for the supplements Brennan used, or kiss their careers goodbye.

No. His hips don't have the essential hip twitch acceleration, and fast receivers accelerate past him, and he becomes toast. Anticipation can't make up for it.

I get that all players can get beat over the top, but this has been common, and that play didn't look exceptional on offense. Neither did the TDs against Bama. They weren't even any moves, they were just go routes, he saw them coming and seemed comfortable enough early in the play. And then gets beat by 3-4 yds easy.

That makes more sense.

So, is he decent with technique, but just hopeless with speed? Basically a zone-only type of guy?

Or is he doing something with his turn that throws him off, and you can fix that with better technique?

I think so. Are we really as slow as it looks sometimes out there? Flott does seem to cover well at times. Other times he misses his assignments. A few calls didn't go his way and he interferes a little. He does not give up though.

I think he could be good if they line him up as a nickle near the LOS. he is a really good open field tackler especially in the backfield

He has heart. If he digs deep, he can be great.

This thread title sounds like a Dr Seuss novel.

All the LSU-s in LS-Uville were wondering one thought:
Can Flott be fixed? No he can not!

But it did not matter on that night in The Swamp.
For the foot of Cade York on the Gators did stomp.

And for the flying of cleats, Flott’s follies were moot.
And the LSU-s of LSU-ville cheered for The Boot.

He's just so inconsistent that he's frustrating to watch. He will make one great play and follow it up with two bonehead moves. After he was ejected, the camera also showed him laughing (I believe with Stingley) and that did not sit well.

I would invite you to listen to former LSU DB and team captain Brando Taylor's assessment of Flott in the post-game.

I honestly think Flott can be much better at Nickel/Safety. He isn’t the biggest guy but he is not afraid to tackle and he struggles covering receivers solo on the outside.

Once McGlothern improves his technique he’ll be a good one too

Ha, like LSU has so many DBs that they have the leisure of pondering whether or not to fix Flott. Some dudes in the student section eating popcorn have their eyes on walking onto the secondary, at this point.

Flott is on the field. He hasn’t quit, even after all the deep burn TDs and all the TD keyboard rantards acting like bums talking smack about him.

I thought the targeting call was bullshite and he was playing hard.

Dude is hardheaded to take all this heat and still want to pop a motherfricka with the ball.

He’s cool with me, not that that would ever matter.

Safeties are a much bigger problem

Stingley at least suited up
