Putting your best glove in LF has never ever ever been a thing lol

You’re equating best glove to best outfielder and that’s not what I’m trying to say.

All you’re looking for at left is reliability. You don’t need circus catches and you don’t need put outs. You need a strong glove that’s going to on average have more opportunities to make outs than any other outfield position.

If you want to take the phrase “best glove” and equate it to “best outfielder” then that’s fine and you’d be correct.

But the only thing that makes your typical left fielder worse than you’re typical right fielder is arm strength. Which is why Dups playing in right has always confused me.

I didn’t think it mattered much in terms of wins and losses but it confused me none the less

I’ve just never heard either. LF is where a coach will put to hide a player. It’s where Blake Dean goes or Schimpf or Kyle Schwarber or Albert Pujols

Or Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Manny Ramirez or Barry Bonds......

It’s not just a position to hide people

Mitchell played left in 2008 during the super regional

Yea but he started the year in CF, lost job to Leon. Helenhi played right, had a great arm & played good defense

Barry bonds is the best defensive LF of all time. Someone has to be. Got lazy as he got older but still very good for the position

Manny Ramirez lol was a terrible defender

Never saw the old guys.

Alex Gordon for instance is prob the best LF of the last decade. He only played left cause he was a converted 3B, as it is the easiest position to learn

Hate to break it to you guys, and no disrespect (I’m definitely NOT saying you’re stupid or don’t understand baseball), but with certain exceptions, Lester is generally speaking correct in his talking points in this thread.

Obviously there are exceptions for various reasons. But his first post about Left, Center and Right was pretty spot-on as a general rule when dealing with players who don’t merit an exception.

Eta: This part is generally correct:

quote:

Best defensive OF always plays CF. Worst OF plays left. Remaining guy plays RF.

I’m enjoying the argument and I’m not saying you’re wrong. You have good points but the glove, speed, arm argument was always meant to be used as an “if everything else is equal” which is never the case.

Centerfield is harder because it’s so much ground to cover.

Right field generally requires the strongest arm on the diamond which is rare.

But the actual glove work from the left fielder is generally more demanding than the right fielder.

So I guess I can say you’ve swayed me at least somewhat to your side but I stand staunch on other points as well.

That being said it’s passed my bed time and I’m out

Cabrera had a field pct of .960

That is astonishingly bad for an outfielder

Yea that’s why he’s a Leftfielder. He never looks comfortable even on routine plays. LF is your entry level OF position

That is kind of true but once you get to high school ball and above it’s not because kids can hit the ball to all parts of the field. Before high school most kids bat right handed and IF they hit the ball, most hits go to the left side of the field

I'm more concerned about his bat than his glove.
