Burrow and “arm strength”

It’s funny how the talking heads say arm strength is a weakness for Burrow but in the same sentence say one of his best strengths is his deep ball. I think Burrow’s arm strength is comparable to a Russell Wilson, or a prime Tom Brady or Drew Brees.... Not as strong as a Ben Roethlisberger or Josh Allen, but plenty strong enough to stretch the field and be a top QB in the league.

Burrow doesn't have elite arm strength like Rodgers/Stafford/Cutler/Allen. What he does have is touch, accuracy, anticipation and downfield vision. That's why his deep ball is fantastic.

Agree . Joe Montana was one of the best QB’s of my time . Arm strength was not one of his strong points. No pun intended.

Arm strength is overrated. There’s 3 levels. Exceptional, good enough, and not good enough.
Burrow is good enough. People with howitzers for arms (like those with speed) usually coast by on talent instead of fine-tuning their craft. Rodgers is an outlier and he’s always hurt

Very true, guys with super elite arms usually trust their arm too much and throw picks in the NFL.

His accuracy and his born with intagables are more important and it ain't even close. His arm is fine. It's what he does with it that counts.

What's really stupid is that I've seen a qb from LSU go first overall with maybe the strongest arm that I've ever seen on anybody...jamarcus russell. He turned out to be shite bc of everything else besides his arm strength. Now, burrow has plenty enough arm strength to make all throws that are going to be needed and had all the intangibles as well, but he is in question now? Man shite, just give me the player that can make plays and wins games....that would be burrow. frick all of this stupid shite bc of his hand size and he can't throw the ball 70 damn yards. That's just stupid scouting.

They need to point to something as a weakness. Arm strength is the one spot where he's not elite, so they call it a weakness. he's elite in nearly every other category outside of maybe speed

He may well be on his way to meeting Montana's accuracy if he keeps improving.

quote:. Very good comparison. Burrow has a stronger arm than Montana ever did. They both share maybe the best trait a QB needs and that is anticipation and a understanding of what a defense is doing and knowing how to attack it.

His reading of defenses and sequencing is off the chart as well.

Payton Manning did not have elite arm strength but he was the smartest man on the field, including both coaches and offensive coordinators, when it came to offense and dissecting an opposing defense.
I think Joe will play remarkably similar to Payton Manning. His deep ball may never be more than 40 yard in the air passes but his ability to throw open receivers and make those 15-25 yard strikes across the middle, leading the receivers so they can get YAC’s will be elite. His anticipation and ability to throw the ball before the receiver makes his break so that as soon as the receiver turns and looks the ball is already half way there will be his trademark.
Once he is a pro and can practice with his receivers like he wants to without NCAA restrictions on practice time etc, his timing with his receivers will only get better.
He is smart like Manning and will be a superstar.

I will take a guy with his ability to read defenses and process info as fast as he can everyday over overrated things like Arm strength, 40 time, height, etc..
Three most important Qb traits are;
Brains/process info
Accuracy
Pocket awareness

Several of the all time best QB's lacked elite arm strength. Montana and Brady are two that he is compared to favorably, both lacked elite strength but were highly successful because they had great timing and got rid of the ball quickly. They also are extremely accurate and were the best at hitting their receivers in stride which led to great YAC.
These are things that Burrow displayed at LSU last year and the question is no different than any other QB coming from college is being able to do those things against much faster DB's and less time to throw.

Tom Brady has a hell of an arm in his prime, still does. Can’t understand why this keeps coming up

Jamarcus Russell had a cannon, but didn’t do jack in the NFL.

There’s a new 30 for $30 crab leg meal at Red Lobster in his honor.

As long as a QB has the adequate arm strength to make all of the throws, then that is sufficient, and Joe Burrow has that in spades.
Meanwhile, accuracy, throwing with touch, and throwing an easily catchable ball are exponentially far more important relative to arm strength.
There are a ton of QBs out there with super strong arms, who can't throw accurately, who can't throw with touch, and who can't throw catchable balls.
Give me a QB like Joe Burrow every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Meanwhile, per Cody Worsham, that's exactly what Myles Brennan was working on before the COVID-19 virus shut everything down.
As Dr. Jack Marucci measured all of the passes thrown in practice by Joe Burrow and Myles Brennan and he discovered that Joe Burrow threw a far easier to catch ball relative to Myles Brennan.
Hence, the coaching staff and the wide receivers have been working with Myles Brennan in the offseason on throwing with more touch on the ball and on throwing an easier to catch ball.
