Breaking down the baseball team: Pitcher
Posted on 11/21/23 at 8:01 pm
Posted on 11/21/23 at 8:01 pm
I'm going to rank the pitchers as I see them and obviously it can change a lot. Brown is the only player I'm listing in two positions, pitcher and OF.
1. Holman
2. Hurd
3. Jump
4. Johnson
5. Shores
6. Noot
7. Guidry
8. Coleman
9. Little
10.Moffett
11.Herring
12.Ackenhausen
13.Loer
14.Primeaux
15.Applebey
16.Dutton
17.Bronzini
18.Brown
19.Anderson
20.Woods
21.Bucknam
22.Ulloa
23.Seo
24.Hellmers
25.Thompson
26.Lape
Holman - I have Holman at the top of the list but it's not by a wide margin. He is experienced, intelligent and has excellent control. The curveball is real. Fastball is not high velocity but has movement. I noticed that he is capable of hitting the corners of the strike zone. He is the type of pitcher who is always going to give you something difficult to hit and he will exploit your weaknesses.
Hurd - His velocity is up a couple of ticks up from last year. He seems to be really confident this year. Last year he seemed to doubt himself on occasions. I don't see that this year. He could overtake Holman as our Ace.
Jump - Jump is not a big guy but has power in his arm 95 MPH from the left side. He has a legit curveball. I would actually be surprised if he isn't in the rotation.
Johnson - I watched Johnson mow down 7 batters in a row against the Cajuns. It should have been 6 but Travinski let a strike 3 get past him. So he just struck out the next guy up. He is the most talented pitcher on the team and it is just a matter of time. I'm real curious about him this year. Will he force himself into the rotation, closer perhaps. I don't know but he is going to be fun to watch. I still can't believe he is on campus.
Shores - I have my doubts about Shores pitching this year. It won't be until the post-season before he can even pitch. The question I ask myself is "Would I like Shores on my team when I go to Omaha?" The biggest arm on the team. You have to admit it would be fun to have him.
Noot - I think Noot plays this year. I watched him throwing 30 yds with some power this fall. He was ranked as high as Shores coming out of HS with an upper 90's fastball. If he does pitch, we don't know what we will get but he is very talented.
Guidry - Jay really likes this guy as a pitcher. The two things that make this guy a really good closer is his competitiveness and he has a true out pitch with his slider. He hasn't put on any weight from what I can tell. He still has power because he is mostly twitch muscle like Thompson last year or Zach Watson from back in the day. He was strictly MIF this fall and the results were not great. He has such great tools for MIF, I was really hoping he would take 2B by the horns. I haven't completely given up on him being a two way player. I thought defensively he looked really good at 3B but he his bat needs to come around. It certainly isn't an impossible dream but I wonder if he would have a better career just pitching at this point. His decision to make. I hope the best for him.
Coleman - I'm going off of memory, so let me know if I'm wrong. As a Freshman he was very good at getting strikes but lacked control. After his injury last year, the control seemed better but wasn't getting the strikes. He hasn't pitched at all this fall but my expectations are pretty high. He was offered decent money in the draft this year. That shows MLB believes in him. He turned it down. I'm not betting against a man betting on himself. I would love for him to have a big year for that reason alone.
Little - There are still some control issues with Little but he has had a good fall. The MLB still ranks him fairly high so they haven't given up on him and neither should we. Players 5-10 are all big question marks in my opinion but they all have the talent to really surprise in 2024. That would be a great story is he can make it happen as a senior.
Moffett - He is really intelligent and built like a SEC linebacker. There were some signs on life this fall and summer. I believe Jay hinted as him being his future closer before the 2023 started. I think that is what they are eyeballing this year for him. If he can get some more control, he will be a weapon.
Herring - Watching him this fall, he just looks really dependable to me. The stuff isn't scary but coming from the left side, I'm sure he will be effective. He is going to be a big contributor this year. I think you will see him controlling games in the later innings.

Ackenhausen - Ack seems in better shape this year and more in control. Last year he would walk the bases loaded and then battle out of it. I like him in pressure situations. Jay loved to throw Cooper in those pressure situations last year because he knew what Cooper was going to do. If he can stay on top of his control, I see the same thing in him.
Loer- He has gone from not highly ranked out of HS to just getting better and better. Even has the fall went by he seemed to be improving but he never has a bad outing. I don't know where this guy ceiling is. He keeps improving, we will see where he stops.
Primeaux - He wasn't highly ranked coming out of HS and redshirted last year. He tends to get overlooked but he put in a very effective fall. His velocity is up a couple of ticks this year and he has looked really reliable. I hope he gets some meaningful innings in 2024 and we get to see what he can do.
Applebey - This guys is really big. I'm talking 6'8" 265LB if I had to guess. He throws in the high 90's but that is about all I know about him. He was taking a bullpen this fall and came back with his head down. He has been dealing with an arm issues for what seems like two years now and is obviously still dealing with it. I really hope he gets his day in the sun and can show us what he has.
Dutton - He wasn't highly ranked coming out but had a decent freshman year. He doesn't have any big tools that I can see but is a good pitcher and has had an effective fall.
Bronzini - He had a really good outing in the purple and gold scrimmage. His velocity is up this year and he has good size. I had my doubts about him but those doubts are fading away. I hope there are enough innings to go around for him to show what he can do this year.
Brown - He was highly ranked pitcher out of HS but his hitting has been the highlight so far for me. I didn't make many Sundays when he pitched and only saw him once. For the most part I think he was okay this fall but not spectacular. I look for him to just keep getting better and to get some base hits while he is developing as a pitcher.
Anderson - He mostly pitched on Sundays, so I didn't get to see much of him either. He's not as big as Brown but at one point before TJ in HS he was ranked higher than Brown and as a first rounder. I'm assuming he is going to be a big contributor but it might be next year.
Woods - He has had back to back TJ surgeries and hasn't really pitched in a couple of years. I'm not sure if he has anything that will scare anyone but was really steady the one time I got to watch him. I think he is happy to just be pitching again.
Bucknam - He didn't contribute a great deal as a freshman so I am hoping to see him take a jump this year. I find him similar to Woods. I think he will be one of those pitchers that you know what you are getting and he can eat innings.
Ulloa - JUCO guy that has some arm issue this fall. He did pitch for the purple and gold so the arm issues seems behind him. He reminds me of Woods and Bucknam. He is about the same size with the same stuff. At least to my untrained eye. Steady and reliable.
Seo - Good arm, 95 MPH. I only watched him once but seemed to have some control issues. He looks like he is throwing with max effort when he pitches and I wonder that will hinder his control. I can't answer that for sure. Definitely some talent there, so we will see how he develops. He suffered some arm issue early this fall and was shut down. I didn't see anything that would suggest TJ, so I hope to see him back out in the spring and climbing my rankings.
Hellmers - Veteran pitcher and I like having him on the team. The veloctiy was in the low 90's this fall so he isn't scaring anyone. He does keep the ball low and he has that experience that should serve him well.
Thompson - He reminds me of Guidry. He is about the same size and the fastball is in high 80's, low 90's. He has been effective this fall, so there is something there. I think he needs another year though. I watched him take some reps at 3B and was impressed with the arm in the infield.
Lape - Was the 5th ranked third baseman nationally coming out of HS so I'm a little surprised to see him as a pitcher only. He does have a good arm on the mound though. He had TJ is senior year in HS so we won't see him until 2025 unfortunately.
Summary - There isn't a player like Skenes on this year team but it is solid from top to bottom. It will interesting to see how Jay and Yetskie manage the ingame situations this year. There are some guys that are really unknown at this point. Guys like Johnson, Little, Moffett, Coleman, Noot and Shores that could play major roles but they are wait and see.
Loer- He has gone from not highly ranked out of HS to just getting better and better. Even has the fall went by he seemed to be improving but he never has a bad outing. I don't know where this guy ceiling is. He keeps improving, we will see where he stops.

Thanks wild! Hurd is the Friday guy I would expect

I think it is really close between Holman and Hurd for the Friday role. I have a slight edge for Holman.

I think guys like Herring and Coleman and Little will be big for this staff. I think Guidry could be a regression candidate. Hope im wrong.
Loer and Ack will also be big for us

Thanks and thanks again for the Fall BPB.
I think Hurd will be the Friday guy. Holman on Sat. Herring on Sunday. Herring just looked so comfortable in Omaha.

He finished '21 really strong. Had extended outings vs Bama and A&M and then pitched a gem in Eugene. Obvious from last year that there's still some rust.

Dude! Thank you for this. Looks like we are loaded on the mound. Can’t wait for baseball to start.

Coleman didn’t throw this fall
Dutton had a pretty nice fall, he had a decent fr year, maybe he can help

I assume you are correct about Woods. I'm getting this from a friend that spoke to the family at one of the scrimmages. Perhaps the double TJ was earlier in his career. The family did mention he was happy to be pitching again.
I didn't see anything that stood out the one time I saw him pitch. It was just kind of steady.

You have a better memeory then me about Coleman. I was a fan since his freshmen year but the lack of control was sometimes frustrating. I would love to see him really elevate his draft stock this year.

Woods had an outing vs FL last year where he struck out all 7 batters that he faced.
He has electric stuff if he can control it.
He was late to pitching in the fall so I assume he became injured in the cape or shortly thereafter. He seems to be working back as his velo is down a tad

You don't need to be surprised about Lape, just know that recruiting sites and rankings aren't worth a darn. He was ranked the 5th best 3rd baseman coming out but he didn't play 3rd base his Junior or Senior year. Junior year he was hurt as well and only played spairingly at 2nd and then played center field his senior year. I've watched him play a lot and he's not a very good infielder. He didn't pitch at all his Junior year and pitched at less than 75% for about 3 or 4 games at the end of his Senior year before his elbow finally gave out.

I just don't see a situation where Jay doesn't give Hurd the Friday night role to open the season.

Great review as always. Woods has only had 1 tj surgery. He had a few great outings for Bama last year and JJ took notice and went after him.
