If I was looking for a coach, I'd take a serious look at Chris Beard from Arkansas - Little Rock. Check out this article from the OK State folks before they hired Underwood.

LINK

"Beard just ended his first season at Little Rock 30-5. He added 10 new players to the team in his first season, improving the record by 17 wins. Beard worked as an assistant at Texas Tech from 2001-11.

Beard’s salary, per the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, is $230,000."

Beard arrived at Angelo State in 2013 to take over a program that had suffered through losing seasons in eight of the previous 10 years. He compiled a 47-15 record in two years at Angelo State. He coached one season at Division II McMurry in Abilene, Texas and has also served as head coach at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College and Seminole (Okla.) State. Beard has amassed a 96-30 record in four seasons as an NCAA head coach

As an assistant coach at Texas Tech, he worked under Bobby Knight for eight years and Pat Knight for 2 more. Just as significant is that Bobby brought Beard in to Texas Tech with him upon Knight's arrival in 2001.

I'll take an assistant coach for eight years to Bobby Knight over a player under Dale Brown for four years any day of the week. Knight schooled Brown throughout their respective careers.

If jones wasn't an alumni he wouldn't be here. There's a reason he spent 12 years at north Texas and brad underwood only spent 3 at sfa. I'll give you that north Texas Is a shite hole and he did improv that some what but 91-88 ain't setting the world on fire. Plus if you go look at the scheduling, you can see why he amassed some of those winning seasons. Hell he never even won the regular season conference title out right.
He's in over his head and the athletic department needs to go and spend 3 mill in a real coach

If I were an AD this year, Underwood would have been far and away my first choice. After that, Beard and Kermit Davis would be my next choices.

I wonder where Butch Pierre will end up. I'm not sure his coaching style is going to work with Underwood, plus given Underwood's age, I imagine he has his guys that he will want to bring in.

By your logic, Duke should have run off Coach K almost immediately. His first 5 years at Duke he had a overall record of 62-57 with a conference record of 20-36. He didn't start having serious success until really his 6th season. And before you say Coach K was already proven, he had one 20-win season prior to getting hired at Duke.

When Duke hired Coach K he was 33 years old with 6 years of head coaching experience. Despite minimal success at Army, he got the Duke job because he played for and coached under Bobby Knight, who at the time (1980) was thought of as one of the preeminent coaches in America having appeared in 2 final fours and wining a National Title at Indiana. Coach K was basically Billy Donovan before there was a Billy Donovan. The thought was that he could be good because of his pedigree

If Jones was a young 33 year old coach just trying to establish his footing when he got the LSU job, I would say "hey, let's give him another year." The reality is that Jones was 51 when LSU hired him with 12 years of coaching experience and decent, but not overwhelming gsuccess at NTU. By year 4 at Duke, coach K had them in the NCAAT. He's only missed the NCAAT one time since. By year 4, Billy Donovan had UF in the national title game. In year 4 at LSU Jones failed to make the NCAA tournament with possibly the most talented roster he will ever have in a very weak SEC. The outlook for year 5 is a team who loses the likely #1 pick in the NBA (Simmons) a very experienced 3 year letterman (Quarterman), a reliable 5th year senior (Hornsby) and possibly his only returning HS All American (Blakeney). He replaces that with a very lightly regarded incoming group of newcomers

So you're telling me that his performance in year 5 is the mandate? With a team that will possibly be his least talented group since his first year at LSU? So that thought process is "well, we still don't know how good of a coach he is despite a complete failure in year 4. However, we'll know FOR SURE after year 5 if he can't produce great results with a far less talented team." That's absurd, and probably unfair to Jones. Most would probably be ok with a down year next season if it were coming off of a great season this year. But if next season is the make or break year, then you can wish in one hand and shite in the other and see which fills up the fastest

did all of coach k's early teams consistently look like they were playing basketball for the first time in their lives?
