The Advocate - One day after ESPN.com named LSU the all-time DBU (not that it will shut Ohio St. up), the current secondary got torched in one-on-ones by receivers and tight ends. One particularly pretty firework: Nussmeier’s 60-yard pass in the air to Brian Thomas.

Kelly was not concerned. “There’s no pass rush,” he said. “They have the whole field, there’s no man-to-man. No clock. We talk to the DB’s about the deficit they have in this drill so they don’t get frustrated. Technique is most important.”

TTT - Kelly also noted about LSU’s offensive backs, that it’s going to be complete and as deep as any running back room he’s ever coached. He just put any concern fans have at running back to rest.

Well yeah, it's hard enough to cover receivers for 3 seconds when there's an entire defense on the field. Covering in a 1 v 1 setting on a completely open field is basically impossible. The athletes are too good with that much space.

It would be more concerning if the defense dominated one-on-ones.

It’s like the Kobayashi Maru from Star Trek. It’s to test and develop character and tenacity not necessarily win.

Anyone got a link to that article calling LSU the all time DBU? I want to read it but I can't find it on ESPN.

Who do you prefer?

I think Moscona is very listenable. Almost unbiased and calls it how HE sees it, and I understand that frustrates people, especially with the whole Nuss vs Daniels thing (which I think he’s been spot on). You just can’t put his takes as gospel. But I think he is very detailed and does a great job from a journalistic pov

I think Mat dies a pretty good job most of the time. Not sure what people are expecting in a small to mid sized market. There’s only so much content to talk about. He’s definitely the most talented on air guy in our region. Listen to some other local sports talk from different states and small cities. He’s pretty damn good. Hunt is good too. I’ve grown to enjoy T-bob as well. It’s not easy to find interesting and relevant things to talk about for 2-3 hours 5 days a week all year.

What does Moscona have to do with an article in The Advocate?

He’s not worried about the cornerbacks in that drill but that doesn’t mean he isn’t worried overall. This db group won’t be as bad 2020-2021 but they are by far the biggest weakness on our team. Some of the elite wr in the sec are gonna toast our guys in man coverage.

one on one drills are usually pretty bias to one position or another

WRs have a huge advantage in DBs

DL i think have a huge advantage on OL

Josh Williams
John Emery
Logan Diggs
Noah Cane
Armani Goodwin
Tre Bradford

Those are backs who all have experience playing Division I football. LSU may have the most experienced backfield in football when you consider that Emery and Cain have been playing since 2019, Diggs was ND's feature back last year (and had a huge bowl game) and then a guy like Josh Williams was LSU's best back down the stretch before he got hurt. I think these guys could do really well with their experience behind this O-line (and an elite running QB who is a threat to pull it and run).

Then you have Trey Holly and Kaleb Jackson coming in to provide depth in case there are injuries.

Can LSU’s defensive front provide more pressure than in the past. That question will have a lot to do with determining how well our secondary can cover.
