Not to be a dick, but you’re admitting you don’t know what to look for in a coach but you’re also adamant that you’re right that Kelly can’t win here?

There are only 3 active coaches with national titles in all of college football: Dabo, Smart, and Mack Brown

Look, winning an NC is very hard. Maybe he won't ever win one, but LSU is a place that bucks some trends. I mean, no one but the biggest homers alive thought Ed O would ever win a national championship. But he did. And people used to laugh at two-loss Les underachieving with ridiculous amounts of talent, but he won one and almost won another.

So while Kelly clearly has coaching flaws and last Saturday was a total disaster, you just never know at LSU when you get the right recruits in place and a little good fortune. Even when it looks improbable.

Mack Brown did. Tom Osborne did. Holtz was into season 19 when he won his first (and only) natty.

It took Bobby Bowden 24 years, Paterno 17 years. Gene Stallings had been coaching almost 30 years, he just had a 19 year gap between head coaching job. It took Harbaugh 21 years from his first year as a head coach before winning one last year

Tom Osborne had lost 7 straight bowls before he won a national championship and went on to win 3 in 4 years.

How many schools do you think have a realistic chance of winning a national title in college football?

in no particular order and I’m talking programs/schools not current teams. I’ll easily list over a dozen!

LSU
BAMA
FLORIDA
AUBURN
TENNESSEE
GEORGIA
TEXAS
OKLAHOMA
MIAMI
CLEMSON
MICHIGAN
OSU
PENN ST
OREGON
FSU
ND

All of this.

You gotta be at the right place too. You cannot win a title at the vast majority of the schools in the country. LSU is one of the select few that you can.

I think he’ll win one because he has an elite defensive staff in place.

I think he’ll win one because recruiting is as good or better than it was even under Ed.

I think he’ll win one because LSU has become a QB destination.

Saturday was awful but this roster is getting supplemented in recruiting the way it needs to be. The talent here will give him a chance to get over the top.

ND, Penn State, Miami are all stretches. And even if you can scrounge up 20 schools (you’d have some reaches on there to get to 20) you’re talking about 15% of schools that even have a remote shot.

It’s 15 max. I’d take Penn State and ND off that list. Point is, unless you have one of those jobs in today’s world of college football, you aren’t winning one. This is his first job in his career with a real chance to win one.

This needs some clarification. Jo-Pa had three undefeated seasons and three more 1-loss seasons before he won his first natty. PSU was an east coast independent school and got little respect in national polls then. They had 8 top-5 finishes in that time frame as well.

No it’s not. He could have won one at Notre Dame but wait….he shite the bed in that big game too.

If you can win a title in South Bend, why has no one done it since 1988?

When do you think BK came to the conclusion he couldn't win a natty at ND?

I think the biggest issue at ND was pretty clear to see. They always had really good players. Eifert, Hamilton, Nelson, etc. They never had enough of them though. If you objectively watched ND in their BCSCG & playoff appearances, they never once looked like the most talented team.

No one knows that. He may have known for a long time but waited for the right job and AD to come calling.

I didn't call him a fraud, I just believe he's great at hiring coaches for any sport but football!

He's the guy who gave Sarkisian his first head coaching job. We all know how much he sucks as a coach. He then poached Chris Petersen from Boise, which many thought was not possible.

A lot of very good ADs have never hired a national championship coach to their school. Conversely, some marginal or even bad ADs have hired coaches who won NCs, sometimes coaches who were average at best but inherited a great roster or caught lightning in a bottle.

After the 2020 playoff loss to Bama where they played as well as they possibly could and still lost handily.
