I gave up going trick or treating back in 1959 in order to travel with my dad on the Tiger Train from Shreveport to Baton Rouge. I attended my very first Tiger game. It turned out to be a pretty good game. The coach at the time would leave LSU a few years later to coach at the US Military Academy. His successor would be vilified his entire career and would be (up until and even after his retirement) compared to his predecessor.I do not question that Coach Dietzel was a great coach. But Cholly Mac is STILL the "winningest" coach in Tiger history.
It seems history repeats itself. Only the names tend to change.

It is now been over 50 years since I became a Tiger Fan. I will be one till the day I die.
Doesn't anyone remember the litany of coaches that passed through after Coach McClendon. Give the Mad Hatter a break. So we had a bad year. Yes our recruiting class may not be as stellar as last year's. Have faith. I would still rather be Bayou Bengal than anything else.

I currently live in Temple, Texas.

I live less than 70 miles from Austin, Texas. This is Longhorn County. (Yes this is the hometown of Lache Seastrunk) Two years ago there were two full sized billboards in town. One was on Interstate 35. Each showed a huge image of Mike the Tiger and read Congratulations to The 2007 BCS National Champions Louisiana State University. That was pretty cool. It made those losing years worth the wait.
Last year I sat in a pub in Austin and watched as the Omaha Dog Pile was Purple and Gold. That also was pretty cool.

Before you begin pounding on your Commadore 64s to reply, take a closer look at a few of the recruits for the 2010 signing class and you might see some amazing baseball talent as well. By the way for someone who actually played baseball for the Tigers in the early 70's ... Six National Championships is way cool!!!!

I live in Austin and I see a lot of LSU stuff. My favorite is there is a license plate you can get that says Texas Tiger and I have seen that billboard of the LSU championship. I usually start yelling about how strong we are.

Great post! Being a life long Tiger fan I feel your anger. After high school three car loads of us road to Alabama to watch our Tigers lose 30 to 0 to the Bear and the Tide. We loved our coach and the team on the way there and on the ride back. I loved the Tigers through the losing years and there were more than I can stand to remember but I never lost my love for the Tigers. LSU has suffered through some bad coaches and Les Miles is not one of them. These wanna be Tiger fans make me ill.

Thanks to the OP for a great post. I suppose if you read the rant long enough you will learn that common sense and perspective will not be contagious or appreciated by the likes of Dolla Choppa and others like him. When asked if he watched LSU during the 90's this is what he had to say:

no, because lsu sucked. which is why we need to win. so we can make money and have a larger fanbase so the school profits

What a piece of shite. LSU is actually one of the top 10 revenue producers in all of college football if I recall correctly. You're the very definition of a bandwagon fan. You need to jump off the bandwagon and try a cliff while you're at it. A man isn't only defined by how he handles success, but also adversity. I would love to win the SEC and BCS every year, and we've got a great shot in the next few years. Yes Coach Miles needs to step it up and I believe he will. What's more he's EARNED the right to correct his mistakes. He's got more honor and character in his pisshole than you'll ever be able to imagine. To true Tiger fans that means something. Fans like you embarass me.

I have done my share of bitching here, and more. But I was a kid on Halloween Night when Billy Cannon did his thing. We were in New Orleans; me and my uncle and cousin were attached to the radio listening (I was just 10) to the announcer screaming. Every year since (when in NOLA) I watched Hap Glaudi or Buddy D re-play the run on Halloween. It comes up now and then on ESPN, too. It's still a big thrill. I didn't understand when Dietzel left, but I do remember the big McClendon win over Texas in the Cotton Bowl. And I was a Cholly Mac fan for most of the time he was at LSU. I never got on the "Make Mac Pack" bandwagon, even though I felt he could have done more to bring LSU's offense up to par with his great defenses. Even though LSU broke my heart in bowls versus Nebraska and Penn St. and a few others... I was very sad when Mac was finally forced out.

But first and forever, I was LSU. Moved out of state in 1984. About then we were getting deep into the coaching spiral of more downs than ups, I hung in there. For most of those years I was living in Iowa and Kentucky, so esp. in Big Ten land, it was hard to get much current info on LSU. And it was pre-internet. So, I had to rely on second hand reports mostly. In KY, we were at least in SEC territory, and I attended more than one LSU/UK game at Commonwealth and cheered again for the Tigers. I suffered though, in the down years with Archer/Hallman especially. DiNardo brought some temporary hope until he self-destructed with Tepperism and whatever. I was not impressed when Saban was hired. I learned otherwise and became a big fan of his OCD style of coaching. I was neutral when Les Miles was hired, but optimistic that Saban's polar opposite might be good for LSU. The first three Miles seasons seemed to be golden. Then the bottom fell out in 08. A winning season, but who was this LSU underachieving team out there? And 09 kept that same kind of underachieving Tiger team on the field. Winning record, but... y'all know what I mean.

So I am having trouble with Les Miles-coached teams. And I am having trouble believing Les Miles really has a "want" to be LSU's coach more than anything else. I want to blindly support him, no matter what but I've seen where that can take you (Archer/Hallman/DiNardo years).

So I bitch. But I really want Les Miles to prove me wrong. Really I do. Because I am first and always LSU and if he turns this funk at LSU around, he's the man!

Excellent post. I agree with the sentiment of the OP as well. Miles deserves one more year to prove that the first 3 years weren't anamolies.

Your first and only post!

My frosh year at LSU was 1988...co-SEC champs...and I got a taste of what success was. Then, the slide happened. I remained a loyal Tiger fan and took my lumps. I remember how awful was...and those years may the last two years look like mana and honey! I'm sick of the bitchin' as well. Our fan base is filled with whiners and punks. I'm ashamed of many in Tiger Nation.

I can't believe a vocal minority of folks are actually bitchin' about this 'awful' recruiting class.
