Well I'd argue that his 1 on 1 skills lack because he lacks quickness

Maybe but in your OP you were questioning his speed like he’s a 4.8 guy defending a bunch of guys who run a 4.2

So you’re talking about his 1on1 coverage skills as opposed to his speed?

Good thing this game will not be decided by a 1on1 drill

Ryan is the defense's John Emery. A highly touted 5 star recruit who has done little over multiple years at LSU, yet every offseason some fans are convinced "this is the break out year!!!"

Ryan is a tweener. Always has been. He's not quick or instinctual enough to be a good CB. He's not big or physical enough to be a good safety. He's played a ton of snaps in 3 years at LSU yet has only two "notable" plays. The strip vs. Alabama (which was overturned) and the 4th pass breakup vs. Florida last year...which was actually the result of a poor throw because the WR had beaten Ryan on the route. That's it!

I hope he has a GREAT season this year. Just like I hope John Emery does as well. But there is absolutely zero reason to expect any of that to happen.

No I was questioning his speed like he is a 4.55 guy vs 4.3 guys. Which is reality.

The 0-2 record that BK has put up in openers at LSU.

D'Anton Lynn + their transfers make a considerable turnaround like UCLA did last season, and their defense puts on a show.

Man for man, USC has fewer question marks on defense than LSU does. LSU is relying on player improvement. USC brought in a bunch of guys who have already shown they can do it.

It feels like LSU needs 30+ to have a prayer.

Sage has been playing out of position because we need him to. It’s crazy to single him out. He’s not a corner, but he plays corner better than our corners, so he plays it.

He also plays safety worse than our safeties, so he isn’t a safety either. He is just a serviceable db who doesn’t really have a position.

I’m more concerned about Sage’s tackling more so than his speed.

his speed and quickness just isn't his strength.

His speed is only suspect if he has an injury. When healthy, he has elite speed. I have no argument one way or the other about his quickness but I would say it is at least average probably above average. Hopefully his recognition has taken a few steps forward, I think that may have impacted people's perception of his quickness (and maybe even speed)

These are all symptoms of his speed. He struggles to tackle because he is trying arm tackle the guy he can't quite catch. Someone pointed out that maybe its his reaction and anticipation more than his speed which might be true but the issue is the same. He is always a step behind. Its why he looked best as a boundary corner in the zone scheme last year. He was playing off ball and had more time to react.

Lincoln Riley has never had a defense… don’t expect it to magically happen now

He ran a 4.45 as a sophomore in high school at The Opening Regional in March of 2019. I have seen a 4.39 listed as his top 40 time, I assume that was clocked at LSU.

Sage's biggest issue is his tackling, this is not new. Even in high school, he was more prone to the big hit rather than wrapping up tackling. In HS that almost always worked for him, not so much in the SEC.

You can run whatever you want in underwear. He doesn't play football in pads at a 4.4 clip.

That we find out our O line is overrated.

If this is true, it will be a LONG season.

aside from the obvious… our db vs their wr

I think there will be some growing pains at WR. Hopefully I’m wrong but I don’t think Lacy, Hilton, Daniels, etc will produce anything close to what we were used to seeing with Nabers and BTJ early on. We’ll have to be patient. There will probably be a couple drops and weak routes sprinkled in. Nuss will have to protect the ball.

I hated 3yds and a cloud of dust as much as the next person, but the best game plan BK could stick with to get out of this one alive, is get a lead early and eat the clock with Kaleb Jackson and our O line.

The same could be said about Chip Kelly.

Total Defense ranks:
UCLA 2023: 14 (one year with Lynn as DC). Two starters from this defense will be playing on Sunday against LSU.

UCLA 2022: 92
UCLA 2021: 74
UCLA 2020: 73
UCLA 2019: 117
UCLA 2018: 104

Would likely fit the STAR position pretty well but you unfortunately need him at corner

The unknowns. We don’t know a lot about our defense. Hopefully they are much improved from last year.

This. There are so many unknowns on this team that it is hard to judge before they play a game. Luckily USC has just as many (and very similar) unknowns.

Exactly, I can already see him flexing on someone after pushing him out of bounds 40 yards downfield.
