Best LSU Receiving Corps Ever List (Statistical Analysis)

Dwayne Bowe: 65 receptions, 990 yds, 12 TDs
Craig Davis: 56, 836, 4
Early Doucet: 59, 772, 8
QB Jamarcus Russell: 232-342, 68% (best completion percentage I noticed), 3129 yds, 28 TDs, 8 INTs)

Wendell Davis (SEC MVP, 72 receptions, 992 yds, 7 TDs)

Things that stick out:
Why was Bert Jones splitting time at QB in '70, '71?
LSU has a proud passing history, but the INT has always been our nemesis as Wickersham, Howard, and Booty all finished with more INTs than TDs. Chad Loup: 12 TDs, 12 INTs. (Lee, somehow, didn't, finishing with 31 TDs to 21 INTs).
Related note: Jamie Howard did less with more than any QB in LSU history. In '94, they still had Bech, Wilson, Kennison, and added TE David LaFleur.
Matt Mauck deserves to be on any best QB list for LSU with his high '03 completion percentage and great career TD-INT ratio (37-18).
I always figured Hodson slumped in '89, but I've come to realize it was our defense that was the problem.
Andy Hamilton could prob play in today's game as I've seen his quickness and he was 6'3", but never made in it NFL (injuries?). I can't really speak for any WRs before '70.. who am I missing?
No great corps since '07. '08 was fine with LaFell, Byrd, Tolliver, but last year may have been our worst WR corps since 1999. If Landry or Beckham ever become All-SEC it won't look that way, but it was our 1st year since the 90's that we didn't have a Star, #1 guy (even Jerel Myers in '99 and Foster/Booty in '98 had better stats), which may mean you'd have to go back to '97 to find a receiving corps that wasn't better than last year's.

That 2006 squad might be one of the most underrated teams in the modern era of CFB.

yea, i think we were so fixed on power running in '07 that flynn's stats didn't really take off
also note: beckham had 713 yds last year and landry 576; so, in '06, we had 3 receivers with more yards than our leading receiver in '12. i think i'm emphasizing this point to show that (especially with all the drops), mettenberger prob had less quality WR's than some of the 90s teams. this should play into cam's hands since he likes to spread the ball around.

Wendell Davis is the best wr I've seen at LSU
Reed was great but Wendell was ahead if his time in some ways. Best hands that I can recall

Agreed, Reed's my favorite, but Davis is probably the best ever, Hodson to Davis was cash. Obviously Reed was best after the catch. Clayton's in the discussion too.

look at the way Jamarcus spread the ball around. It about as even as you can get so for me it means that #1 these guys knew how to get open and #2 they were so good that putting two people on one guy would not hinder their production.

No Beckham and Landry are great wrs and it's moreso the play calling than anything else. Why are most of their routes runs to the sidelines? Why not get these guys to attack the middle of the field and use that athleticism?
Mett always over throwing by 5 yards didn't do any good also. People say Mett got better during the last handful of games we had but I think it was more of the WRs improving to make him look better.
What I'm hoping is that Dural practices good enough to jump Boone and play as Landry's back up. Beckham should be used in the slot and Leslie should get X position.
To tell you the truth, it's so many new pieces and improvements made on offense over the offseason that I believe we get bstter by default.

remains to be seen. i think particuarly beckham made you wonder if he was mentally ready to be an all-sec receiver. i could see them fixing the drops, but as late as the peach bowl you couldn't count on them.
even in mett's best game vs. bama, we could've built a lead in the 1st half, but big drops from the receivers stalled drives.
i'm all for the guys, but i'm not sure any of them will play in the nfl. beckham's speed is nice and landry's athletic, but neither of them have the size to be a #1 guy in the mold of randle, tolliver, lafell, etc. boone makes the big catch against a&m and then completely disappears.

Same here. Put him in the league 20 years later and his numbers would have been amazing.
Offenses were much different then, but he was the best IMO.

Also in '86 Wendell had an even better year with 80 receptions for 1,244 yards and 11 TDs.
Josh was probably the best I've ever seen at getting open. Dude catches for almost 300 yds and embarrasses Bama, then catches for 183 vs. Arkansas and 187 vs. Auburn to put us in the title game.

I'd put 2001 & 2003 ahead of 1987.
