PETE JENKINS....
The man revoltionized the way DL is played in college football and developed most of the DL drills today's coaches use.

Possibly Craig Randal from a coaching stand point. Not sure how he was recruiting. Coached guys like AJ Duhe.

Mack Brown came to mind at first, but I like the Pete Jenkins and Charlie Mac choices better, I'd probably go with one of them.

I think we've had exceptional defensive coordinators over the years. Archer was excellent as a defensive coordinator. Carl Reese was outstanding, as was Bo Pelini. As far as a position coach, Pete Jenkins stands out as, perhaps, the best position coach in LSU history.
On the current staff, Frank Wilson is one of the finest recruiting coordinators of the modern era.
Having said all of that, in the pantheon of LSU assistant coaches, I put Chavis as 1b., tied with one Charles Youmans McClendon, at 1a (DC from 1953 to 1961).
(ETA: I kind of neglected to talk about offense very much - I think Morris Watts and Jimbo Fisher deserve some mention, despite Fisher's treatment on here sometimes, his results for us speak for themselves).

I'm surprised no one has said Gary "The Wizard" Crowton.
