Take a guess which one had the better completion % and career qb rating in a much tougher sec.

Take a guess at which one had many, MANY more chances in a more wide open game?

Compare their pro stats, genius.

Also, it's harder to have a higher completion % the more times you throw the ball so that throws a wrench into your" attempts" argument.

It's easier to have a better qb rating with lower attempts.

That's why there are minimum prerequisites for attempts when ranking conf or ncaa statistical leaders.

What you should've argued was that Jones had a better td/attempt number that Jruss.
Qb rating and completion % are harder to keep up the more attempts you have.

You can clearly see that the other people in this thread are talking about the entire career and you are trying to make it about only at LSU.

Russell was poster boy for career off track due to agent hold out, never making up missing pro coaching, getting out of shape.

The right mentor and he reports slim and ripped. On his toes and learning, day 1.

Yeah, by far. Bert Jones had the same physical ability that Jamarcus had, and he obviously had a lot more self-discipline.

For all his self discipline issues, JaMarcus went to the worst ORGANIZATION in the NFL. You have to wonder how he would have done on a team with some real direction.

You clearly didn't watch Jruss if all you think he did was throw the football hard.

His 2006 season is the gold standard for lsu qbing.
He set the lsu passing records in COMPLETION %, passing tds(tied) and completion.
He did that while our top 4 rbs didnt have 1500 yards combined.

And ...he got half of his yards in 4th quarter zipping it to D Bowe in triple coverage!

Asked who was the greatest QB he ever saw, Bill Belichick indicated it may have been Bert Jones.

If russell had any amount of brains then he probably would have been number 1.

It wasn't the brains that separated Jones from Russell. It was the heart. Both guys were superior physical talents in college and so looked great while there. There isn't a whole lot of film on Jones as a Tiger due to the media coverage limitations at that time. Also Chollie Mac's 2 QB system cut into Bert's high light opportunities. But watch some of Bert's NFL high lights and you will see drive and the will to win on a level that you never saw in Russell. Russell was a great LSU quarterback, but I would take Jones every day of the week.

Yep, both were great natural talents. Both could effortlessly deliver a fast and accurate long ball. I'm sorry that this thread evolved into a character assassinationof JR.

Never saw Jones play but based on what I saw from JR he wouldn't be on my top 10 list if I'm looking for a competitor, leader or team player to build a championship team around.

BTW my comment about JR throwing to D Bowe was not meant to be positive, it was because he fiddle F@#Ked around for the first 3 quarters with no sense of urgency that lead to all those dramatic come from behind wins and super risky throws into double and triple coverages. JR played on one of if not the most talented team in LSU history (2006) and could not score more than 3 points vs Auburn and only scored 10 against UF, a game in which he fumbled on the 2 yard line with a chance to go up 14-7 and keep momentum! JR is my second least favorite LSU QB behind only Jordan Jefferson!
But hey, he could throw the football through the up rights from the 50 yard line...ON HIS KNEES!!!! #FRICKBAMABOY

I did not mean to assassinate JR's character. I appreciate what he did for LSU. I just think that it's just an example of the timing. Football wasn't the gold rush in Jones' time that it is now. A lot of players now are motivated by the payday. It's not a knock. It just is what it is. A bigger percentage of NFL players in the Jones era were motivated by competitive passion than we see today I think. That's why I think the NFL was better back then and why I like college football more than NFL today.

There is zero debate on who the better QB was at LSU.... It's Russell and it's not really that close... I love Bert Jones.... he was very very good while here.... but not on Russslls level.....

Getting ready to score at Florida national championship on the line Russell fumbles the snap. Lackadaisical. We lost to Auburn and Florida 2 games with leadership we should have won.

I find it amazing that so many Tiger fans don't even know the behind the scenes story of what went on in Russell's life that contributed to him losing his focus with the Raiders. In 2009, Jamarcus lost 2 uncles just within a matter of weeks. His uncle Ray Ray was actually the father figure in his life. It's obvious Jamarcus was effected by this in his personal life & it crossed over into his football life. Everyone handles traumatic situations differently but I don't care who are you, a personal lose such as this could bring any human down.

quote:

JaMarcus left LSU after his junior season and signed, after a holdout that lasted until the second game of the regular season of his rookie year, a contract with the Oakland Raiders that included the biggest guarantee of payment in NFL history at that time -- $31.5 million - although Russell says later in the video: "Just because you have money doesn't mean you're not human."

On April 17, 2009, Russell's uncle, Ray Ray Russell, a notable DJ in Mobile, died of heart disease. Ray Ray had moved to Oakland with JaMarcus. Three weeks later, JaMarcus Russell's Uncle Mike died. Russell is moved to tears while talking about his personal loss.

Russell says he didn't have his mind on football when he reported to training camp for the 2009 season. Jeff Garcia, whom the Raiders brought in to back up and mentor Russell, noted the quarterback weighed 305 pounds when he reported.

FLA maybe you could put on Russell, BUT the AU game was ALL about playcalling... It was horrible... Say what you want about the refs... But LSU had the ball inside AU's 50 yard line on like 6 occasions and got only 1 FG... The playcalling was horrible.......
