why to people keep saying this? he allowed 5 er. a quality start is by definition 7 innings or more and 3 earned runs or less. i'm not sure what to call it, but quality isn't it.

In MLB, yes. In college, it's subjective. I don't know how it can be argued.

This is an opportunity for Alsup to nail down the #3 moving forward and put him into the rotation for next year.

The guy has come a long way since the beginning of the year.

as opposed to "wins", which are highly overrated?

for instance u can go 5 IP, give up 8 ER, but if u leave with a lead, you'll get a W. that is "ghey"

Mainieri likes to reward the lunch pail type players later in the SEC tournament. Guys that maybe aren't the most productive, but work hard to stay on the team for when they're needed.

Ryan Byrd in the tournament title game last season is the exact same situation. I hope we see the same kind of start from Alsup tomorrow. It's possible.

Nah I don't like wins either. But the term "quality start" is way too subjective.

I wouldn't say wins are overrated, but I get your point. To me the only pitching stat that matters is ERA, the Cy Young should go to the player with the lowest ERA, IMO. Similarly, I think the more important batting stat is on-base% rather than average.

actually no, it's pretty clear what constitutes a QS. 6IP or more 3 or less ER

Wins suck as a stat, how many times has Roy Oswalt pitched great games and not gotten the W bc of lack of run support, or the
bullpen imploding after was pulled?
