Looking at third options for pitchers not named Lange poche, walker or Gilbert , I was most impressed with Becks stats . He has the lowest opposing batting average at 167 against him which is lowest on whole team . He has a low walk (11) and high strike out rate (21) He also has lowest era on team at 3.65 besides Lange , poche , walker , Hess and Newman .

What am I missing on him , did he do this against inferior competition? I see most wanting to start Bain or Peterson

It would be Peterson.

More to it than those stats alone. Check innings pitched I'm sure

Beck
He was impressive for the most part IMO

Reynolds
Peterson
Bain
I don't remember Bain's last outing
Peterson & Reynolds are good when they're on

Bush
Strall
Reese
All good pitchers, could eat up an inning or 2 depending on if they are on
Would have someone else in the pen ready just in case

2017 Stats

For anyone interested

What happened to Bain? He was good, then just disappeared in the lineup. He pitched very well against the batter he faces in the swing door pitching rotation the first arse whoopin series against OSU. Something has got to be underlying between him and Pulmonary.

We realize its the finals, the issue is there is no easy answer here. There are good arguments for bain, peterson, and even beck.

I go bain because of experience.

I would pitch Beau before Bush; Bush should never see mound in CWS

The thing that happened to Gilbert, Beck, Bain, Peterson,etc....was Walker. The term JWS started years ago when we didn't have a clear #3 but that obviously changed this year. You could make the argument that we had 4 SEC calibre starters if you include Gilbert but no one expected him to match the performance of Lange on Friday. Who expected Walker to be in contention for next year's Friday night role? Possibly CPM but none of us did.

To the OP question...I think that Beck should be on the shortlist of Game 1 options. I also think that Beck may become a weekend starter/closer over the coming years. He's been a football/baseball player and he's ~6'7". Hess wasn't throwing 97 when he got to LSU and the reason that he's doing it today is Allen Dunn.

I agree , just unsure with his stats and his potential why he isn't being mentioned to start

Zero velocity. Really the only gripe with him.

11 walks in 24 innings is pretty high.

you ain't gettin' 97 out of Beck w/o completely breaking down his arm motion and starting over. he short arms his pitches and just doesn't get enough leverage due to that. however, he throws strikes as that technique is like "throwing darts" in that it can result in accuracy. location is so important I doubt Dunn will ever reconstruct his entire motion, imo. that dude needed the right pitching coaches starting at about age 9 or 10 that taught him to reach back and get the full impact of his 6'7" frame.
