Even with a crappy team it still makes more money than every sport on campus sans football, even our beloved and precious baseball.
Just think if we actually invested in the program, how much money could be made

#LSU baseball made $2.59M on tickets sold in 2015-16.

That's the most of any sport at the school. Except, of course, for football's $38M.

Most of that revenue came from the SEC media deal, pretty sure of that.

The money the conference gets from NCAA tourney means LSU hoops will always get a piece of that pie whether they suck or not.

The money the team is losing for the athletic department is really only due to ticket sales and the concessions it would bring in.

Basketball:$8.652M in rev...$6.30M expense**$2.35 profit.

Baseball:$$5.878M in Rev...$4.33M in expense**$1.54 profit

This according to Dellanger at the advocate

If gymnastics held 20 meets per season, they would be ahead of basketball, too.

Please tell me you were born in 96 and arent a grown man yet?

Part of the money is the split each sport receives from the SEC. That is a great bit larger contract for basketball.

The actual LSU basketball team does materially worse than the actual LSU baseball team in recent years.

It doesn't matter where the money comes from. All $85 million in football rev. isn't just ticket sales.
The point is that if we invested in the basketball program, and got a good coach, then the revenue generated would be worth the investment

I agree with this point.

However, I do not agree that the LSU basketball team currently makes more money than the LSU baseball team. I understand the numbers presented in the advocate, but using previously signed contract amounts to determine the current financial success of a venture is a poor way of running numbers.

I get what your saying, But how much more revenue can baseball generate? They've been a national seed 3 straight years, the stadium is sold out, every game is available to watch either on tv or online. To me there isn't much more revenue to be made in that sport.
Basketball on the other hand, there is tremendous opportunity to increase the revenue. Season tickets are at around 4,500 tickets sold for an arena that hold 12,500.
At a cost of $250 per season ticket if you doubled your season ticket holder base to 9,000 (the same as baseball)you would add $1.125 mill in revenue, not to mention concessions

I disagree with none of this. I simply disagree with the statement in the OP.
