Jay loves lefties, but I do believe he wants some balance and will pay attention to matchups. Good news is he has options.

Maybe not. Good quote from Jay:

quote:

“We’ve got four guys that I feel good about: Jordan (Thompson) is going for sure; Tyler (McManus) or Alex (Milazzo) is going to catch; and then the other three (Morgan, Dylan Crews, Jacob Berry),” Johnson said. “Gio (DiGiacomo) has worked hard. He’s had some good success here. He is right on the cusp of playing and he’s going to have plenty of opportunities.”

Johnson said another part of setting the lineup will be incorporating more left-handed batters, which has played an intricate role in his success as a coach.

How has Dugas looked so far? I really don’t hear a lot about him and idk if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Not great but I’m really not worried about him

Just by the little bit scrimmage stats he doesn’t appear to be tearing it up. He will come on though I am not worried about him.

Maybe Gio will get the start in right. Drost and Stevenson certainly haven’t taken it.

GIO seems like he is having a good fall. His speed is such an asset.

Bianco was dressed out last night but did not play. I saw him around the dugout and did not notice anything obviously wrong.

If Gio is in the lineup I really don’t understand him not playing center but that’s certainly what it’s starting to look like

From Dandy Don, Scott's interview with JJ

quote:

DandyDon: It sounds like you’ve got a lot of options for the designated hitter spot, including McManus when he’s not catching.

Jay Johnson: Yeah, and there’s another element. Finding left-handed and right-handed balance is important to me, especially as you talk about going through an SEC schedule with the number of right-handers with really good arms and power breaking balls. You can’t just trot seven right-handed hitters up there; it’s not going to work. So that’s something we have to look at.

IMO, two emerging storylines are Gio is having a pretty good camp and Drost is really struggling.

Is it hurting Gio that he’s another lefty? I wonder how much Jay cares about matchups.

Shouldn’t be. Jobert is the presumed RF starter at the moment and bats lefty as well. Last nights “home” team, which could be a presumed starting lineup went lefty righty the whole way till the 8/9 position, which went righty righty with Milazzo and Dugas.

As for those talking about Gio playing CF, I would’ve thought that would be the case too if I’m the starting lineup; but hasn’t been. Even in scrimmages where he has played with Crews, Crews has still been the CF with Gio playing RF; so Johnson seems set on keeping Crews in CF no matter who’s out there with him.

I think Drost has fallen back in the OF race. Whatever mojo he had going in the fall has been lost in the spring so far.

Fair enough. Leah prob got it wrong

She definitely got it wrong. I agree with Scuba. I was at the scrimmage too and Crews first 2 AB’s were reached on error. Scoreboard graphics were even keeping up with their performance on the night and showed the same for his first 2 plate appearances.

They did last night. I assume they’re doing it all weekend; but idk if it was just last night’s game that was being considered “preview game” (meaning operated like a real game) or if all weekend is.
