Dickinson is a really intriguing player to me. I have no idea what to expect.

He was really hyped up when it was announced that he was transferring here and I just assumed he would immediately step in at SS. But now it sounds like he's settling in at 2B and SS will be between Braswell and Milam.
I've only been to one scrimmage, but Dickinson is every bit of 200lb. Looks to be well filled out and mostly muscle.

I have seen Dickinson attempt to steal several bases and get thrown out. He has speed but not enough for these catchers :)

We only have one true power threat this year.
Noticable in the cumulative stats posted here.

This may appear the wrong way on this question, But Notice I say IN ADVANCE: I am a MONSTER MILAM FAN. Thought he deserved Freshman of the Yr award! My concern is not with his ability to play third:;he it comes? Any concern on his Height Play playing 3rd? Usually you try to play BIG AGILE guys on the corners. Right? What is going to be interesting is how the Catchers react to having to throw Low to 3rd. 6'0 at the knees is not the same height as 5-5 at the knees. Any Thoughts?

It's not ideal, but Braswell throwing sidearm from third isn't ideal either. I believe Jay decided on Dickinson at 2B because that is where he is most comfortable and he can spend more time focused on his offense.

Braswell and Milam are better suited at 2B as well, but both are going to be just fine playing where Jay decides to put them.

It's not ideal but also not a big concern.

Then you have comments like this, yet you figure Milam and Braswell are probably 2nd basemen at the next level so what gives

I think mainly what gives is that only one of them can play 2B? Braswell has played the left side of the IF his entire career and in the SEC, so makes sense to keep him over there. If Jay thinks Milam is better suited to play the left side than Dickinson that's really all it is imo.

Again, strange. It's not like we're trying to hide an injured arm like we did with Dugas.

I don't mind the shifts, so I can understand what Jay is doing here. He's trying to put who he says his best defender is, Milam, in a spot where the ball is most likely to go. Both Dickinson and Braswell have played SS so there probably isn't a huge drop off putting them there together while Milam plays where the ball is most likely to go.

quote:

Jay's never tried to do this since he's been here so again, not sure what to expect from Dickinson on the basepaths.

Lastly, yeah Jay hasn't done it much in his time here, but he also has had a lot more power oriented teams than this one. The last few years just haven't had the speed to steal a lot of bases, like it appears this team has. He's said he doesn't care to commit to a certain brand of baseball if it doesn't fit the roster. I am interested to see how it pans out this year though.

I still think tanner reaves is going to push his way into the lineup. He’s just too good not to play

His defense has been surprisingly good. Now the offense is kicking in.

Braswell's lack of power and perhaps speed are the only reason he isn't playing pro ball right now in my opinion. He is a really good college player and we are very lucky to have him back for another year.

Most of you haven't had a chance to see John Pearson play in person. So I will give you some observations. He lacks straight line speed but moves good in a limited space. He has made some nice plays at third but has had his share of errors. His arm appears to be above average from what I can tell. I believe he has the tools to be a good third baseman but needs more reps and development.

As a hitter he has quick hands and a compact swing according to a scout on YouTube. This allows him to make a lot of contact. He also has a lot power but he's not going to put up the numbers Tommy did, at least not yet.

I believe all four freshman infielders, Ryan, John, Hogg and Costello are a year away from being contributors. They are all good enough to play as freshman but it will probably be next year before they are going to make a meaningful impact on our team. This makes Braswell coming back, a pretty big deal. The signing of Reaves was also a very important pick up. He gives you some depth without having to force a freshman.

Bras played 2B at USCe several games his sophomore season. I think that is where he ultimately ends up next level hopefully some this season.

I got to a scrimmage last weekend, I think what I was most surprised about was how big he is in person. He definitely doesn't look like the younger brother to Josh Pearson

Honestly I'd love for you to highlight your thoughts and items I missed/or don't cover on each position. I think it would be good for the thread

He's definitely going to be our late inning defensive sub, his glove is too good and CJJ loves his lefty hitter matchups late in the game.

If Bras or Dickinson have slow starts or run into problems with errors, Reaves will definitely get his opportunities.

I appreciate it guys. I will see what I can do with the new guys that a lot of posters have not been able to see play yet. I'll check it out in the morning when I have a little more energy.

I do want to add something that doesn't pertain to this thread but pertains to the team. For you guys that don't read the recruiting board there have been some interesting developments of late. Project, who does incredible work, dug up a recent court ruling that allowed a JUCO player another year of eligibility by not counting his JUCO year. We are one short on the roster of 40 because Connor Simon is no longer on the team. We actually took a look at adding to our current roster with another JUCO that followed the same angle in court. His name was Alberto Osuna and he ultimately chose Tn. The latest dug up was that we were looking at Beck possibly pursuing the same angle. It will be interesting to see what becomes of all of this new JUCO rulings.

First, thanks to Adam and Wild for all the info. Y'all are awesome.

My question, do we have any draft eligible sophomores this year?

I will add a few observations on players Adam has covered.

Costello has been making some good plays and digs out of the dirt at first base. He also plays the OF, but I think his future is at first.

Frey seems to have the power back that he was missing last year due to the shoulder injury. His bat will really need to take off to force his way in to playing time.

I watched Dickinson and a few other players take grounders in a practice before fall scrimmages even started. I wasn't impressed. In the fall he was surprisingly pretty good at SS. The only error I remember him making was at 2B. I do know the SEC is at a different level of baseball than what he has ever experienced. He started his college career as a walkon. Trying to adapt to SEC SS and pitching might not have been in his best interest. Letting him play 2B and focus more on his offense might be the best move for him and the team. That being said, he is a confident, very motivated, hard working man and can accomplish whatever he sets out to do.

Reaves was brought here for his offense, at least that is what I thought, but his defense has been above average. He made some really nice plays on bunts from third base, caught a line drive at second that he had to climb the ladder. I have seen make some nice double plays with Dickinson at SS and him at second. This spring he had a nice catch in foul territory playing in the OF and I don't really recall any errors in the fall or spring. As of late his bat is heating up.

Ryan looked really good defensively in the fall. There have been a few boo boos in the spring, so he is taking his freshman lumps. Nice looking prospect defensively though. We are still waiting on the bat but signs of life there in the spring.

According to a scout, the hitting analytics on Hogg showed his hitting potential, bat speed and things of that nature. He has hit fairly well since arriving on campus. He is built like a running back. Average size overall but well built with square shoulders. His defense has been pretty solid at 2B and he has gotten a fair amount of reps at SS but still needs development time at that position.

Stanfield was a guy that Jay mentioned as really having a chance to improve with his hitting. The early results are good and he has had a nice spring offensively. He isn't a big guy but there is some pop in his bat. He had a HR in the fall and the spring.

The big knock on Curiel was his power and lack of physical growth in high school. He is already putting on weight and has enough power to get it over the fence. They were showing exit velocities on the hitters one practice. I didn't get to see everyone hit but Priester stood out, with one hit at 111 MPH. Frey was next with several over 100. Curiel was in the high 90's, which was comparable to Larson and all of the other hitters I saw that day.

Speaking of Larson. He is having a nice spring. What isn't showing in the stats is even on his outs there have been loud contact. He had one scrimmage that he went 0-4 in the spring but all four hits were solid. They just went straight into a glove or were caught be the wall.

Beck had a nice HR this past weekend and as I mentioned earlier he is working on having an extra year of eligibility due to some recent court rulings on JUCO players.

Arrambide is still having some defensive miscues this spring, which is expected but the bat still looks really good. Both him in John Pearson improved as the fall went along. Arrambide had some of the best stats in the fall before it was over. Great looking freshman.
