Sorry hit enter before moving into body of message...
They just get in the batters box and swing for the fences. Don’t even try to take what the pitcher and defense are giving them !!!!

I agree as well. There are some guys that are patient.... Honestly I think there’s 3 of them. But that’s it. Hal Hughes, Chris Reid, and sometimes josh Smith... Hal Hughes takes a pitch until he gets a strike from what I’ve seen. Chris Reid knows the strike zone really well. And josh smith..... he just seems to know when to be aggressive, and to know when to take the first pitch. IMO Josh Smith has the best approach on our team.
And I think you can be to patient at the plate. And also I think you can be to aggressive.

Yes! You are right. Didn’t realize he was 3rd best on the team in base on balls. My apologies.

CPM has a philosophy that I think is a good one. It is to be aggressive at the plate. Never let "your" pitch go. If you see it on the first pitch - swing!
In college the pitchers often throw a fastball for a strike on the first pitch. If you take it they come with the fastballs out of the zone and the offspeed. Often the best pitch a batter will see is the first one, so Paul has them swinging away.
I think this is the correct strategy. Where I fault CPM is that when we face a starter who is on his game, but without much behind him, we don't alter the strategy to get his pitch count up. Generally this is a bad idea in college, but I'd like to see them try it three or four times a year when we find ourselves against that kind of staff.
My second complaint is that Dunn throws the fastball too much in the first inning. I get that you don't want your starter to show everything in the first, but when Ole Miss hits a first inning HR off all three of our starters it is a problem.
Third is the oft-bemoaned lack of lefties.
Fourth is that we should ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have a great catcher. This is the second year in a row we have sucked behind the plate.

Patient hitters work the count and have the ability to foul off tough pitches to keep bats alive until you get something that you can put in play hard. Lots of time the take sign comes from the dugout. I think PM wants our power hitters to be aggressive early in count and then our other contact hitters to work the count. It was written how he blasted the team in Alabama for taking too many called strikes especially with 2-strikes. A lot of the free swinging we see is the aggressive approach they are taught in my opinion. I think Reid, Smith, Hughes, Duplantis and Broussard are our best guys in working counts.
