With the motions Mainieri was making during the argument and the way the umpire's mask flew off that is what I'm assuming. The cather hit the ump in the face when he brought his arm back to throw. It couldn't have had anything to do with Edward. He wasn't leaning over the plate or anything and they never made contact.
