Really wasn't all that bad of a move. Either you make sure there's no throw at the plate or you make sure Pap is in scoring position if they throw home. (Edit)

When multiple players make base running mistakes in a consistent bases, it's on the coach.

Exactly. You assume the throw goes to the plate. And yeah if smith gets thrown out at least you have a guy in scoring position.
