it happens way too many times, and in a game like this, there is no excuse as to why it keeps on happening.

imagine what happens when there's a HUNH attack like a&m giving this defense absolutely no time to communicate?

Well, that was kinda our situation in 2011, and that was where most people had optimism for this 2013 defense.

And some years, it doesn't click. It's an LSU anomally to have a thrashed defense. That's why we are shocked from this year. We'll be okay.

It just proves that we need to play a lot more man coverage. It's one thing if chief doesn't think we have the type of guys who can man up on the outside, but if they aren't competent enough to know their assignments in zone then that's even worse. Plus man coverage at least gives options to send blitzes and create pressure.

so what can we attribute this to? youth?

We can attribute it to having shite on defense. One, maybe two, good players can't stop 11. The worst defense in LSU history is just getting started.

I'm looking for bright spots on this defense - I'm not trying to be overly negative - I am a bonafide Positiger.

However, Jordan Allen, Kwon Alexander and Barrow appear to be our only playmakers on defense. For all the criticism of Welter - he doesn't seem any worse than any of the other players in other position groups, other than the three I named at the top.

None of the corners look solid in coverage (certainly not against UGA) - the safety play has never really gotten above a C minus all season, and the line cannot get effective pressure OR penetration. There is no position group that is a strength on defense and there is no synergy between the line and linebacking corps OR between the corners and safeties. There is no strength upon which to rely, so we basically give up whatever the opposing offense wants to run - unless we have a significant talent advantage.

Having said that - UGA looks to be as complete and near NFL level offense as is run in college now - if I'm going to lose to a team, I prefer losing to an offense like UGA's - none of that spread crap (they did run a little tempo, but that doesn't bother me) - they line up and run off-tackle, counters, play action, draws, normal stuff out of the I, variants of the I and regular shotgun.

Our defense is not nearly as good as the past 2 years, there are few playmakers, little experience and lots of youth. There is not enough season to make this right, barring some miracle by Chavis.

So we play Welter because he knows the calls, but he is useless after the ball is snapped, so we get gashed anyway.

We dont blitz because we don't trust the secondary, but they get smoked anyway because the QB has all day to pick them apart.

At this point how could trying something dfferent hurt? This coaching staff loves to keep banging their heads against a wall as if things will magically change though.

Easy, now - we had some horrific defenses in the 1990s - this was an excellent offense we played, and were just not up to the task.

(FWIW - I believe we win this game by 2 touchdowns in Tiger stadium, albeit 54-40 )

Seems like we need the most simplified and basic defense there is. Our guys get confused and blow coverages whenever possible.

No way to run that against UGA - and I think that's what burned us.

Murray has seen everything and their line is stacked. If they had any sort of defense at all, they would be a lock to win it all (and, honestly, the same would be true of us).

I know that, but no one ever blames players. There's a difference between coaching and play calling. The last few years, everyone loved Chavis (for the most part). Now, I guess this year, since the guys they have in there suck, he's a terrible coach.

I can't speak for everyone, but I want Chavis calling the plays until the final defensive stand for the go-ahead score. Last night was nearly identical to last years Clemson and Bama. I know Jalen slipped last year versus Bama, but we were still going with that bend don't break crap that is proven to break with LSU.

With that said, I don't think our D could get to Murray if they blitz so I really don't know what to call this year.

There is an upside to the game in my opinion. Even with all the blown coverages, muffed punt deep in LSU territory, inability to run the ball in the first half, couple dumb penalties deep in LSU territory and Chavis' soft coverage on the game winning drive; LSU only loss by 3 on the road against a quality opponent.

Fulmer got fired at Tennessee in part because the Chief would go into prevent defense and prevent ....wins!

What The F#$@ is going on out there?

2008 was pretty bad, brah - gave up 52 points to UGA in Tiger Stadium.

Alexander/Beckwith/Barrow

There's absolutely no reason it shouldn't be this at this point at LB
