It's simple on defense. Swarm to and gang tackle the RBs. They are almost impossible to tackle one on one....Thus making McElroy have to beat one of the best secondaries in the country.

And on offense. Everything needs to be quick (no slow developing plays)...or misdirection/draws/screens to RB/TE. Pick the right spots to throw deep...1st down play actions or 2nd and short.

I like to add one of my personal favorites:

Change all sideline signals each quarter so Saban cannot pull a Belichek.

I would like to see a series of just flea flickers, statue of liberties, double reverse passes, fumblerooskies, and an occassional throw back to the QB. I would also like to see at least two to three onside kicks, because apparently that is a Bama weakness.

aside from a designed run by JJ every now and again, has LSU run a draw with a running back all season?

jump on them early and make bama play catchup. if we force them to pass to come back, we win.utah showed this last year.

....or how about a true hurry-up offense to start. Mt. Doughboy would be sucking wind early and often.

Like us, Saban loves substituting to suit his game plan. Take it away without allowing time to do so. And, when they do, they will be running double time......kinda like in-game gasers!

One thing I haven't read yet is an emphasis on special teams. We haven't had good kick coverage ALL year. I would bet that our opponent is averaging starting from their 40 when we kickoff. That could be a problem with your speedy returners.

For us, we have Javier Arenas who is as good as they come in kickoff returns, but we get a block in the back or holding penalty probably 9 out of 10 times.

If the game is close, which I think it will be, the emphasis placed on special teams will be a major factor in who gets the win.

VERY true. Field position is going to be at a premium for both teams in this one. Arenas is always scary with the ball in an open field......I hate that guy!

Speaking of, it is essential Les/Crowton address that corner blitz package with Arenas. He was a serious pain in UT's arse.

Also, an opportunity to get some yellow flags for pass interference on these pass routes.

With SEC refs in T- Town? Are you serious?

I know it will be a great game, but I promise the refs will decide the game. I'm ordinarily not a conspiracy theorist, but the fact that the SEC wants Alabama v Fla. in Atlanta can't be ignored.

Bottom line:

Defense

1. disguise blitz packages
2. keep 8 in the box to stop the run
3. man to man, make McElrory beat you

Offense

1. Can't run up the middle. Establsih seal blocks on ends and work the outside in the running game.
2. Use Shepard in passing game
3. Stay out of 3rd and longer than 3.
4. Special Teams, Special Teams!!

All good points, but #2 is iffy. You better bet your arse Saban will be ready for this. His defense is damn disciplined and will not be fooled off of coverages.

I think I'd try to use the recent noteriety about the officiating. If Saban's CB's still like to get physical with the receiver early in the routes, try to do something to make a show of it - get tangled up, get "knocked down" by them, get into a little scuffle, something. (For a couple of these might want to make sure it's not our top receivers if things get too out of hand).

It's a long shot but it might just get the referees looking at some holding or interference that you know will be going on.

Bama - General armchair strategies
some are probably obvious

Defense:
1 - Utilize man-on-man to stop Ingram. PP is one of the few DBs who can match up very well with Julio. Peek needs to be accounted for.
2 - Blitz Gmac.....he hates pressure.
3 - Put a spy on Ingram. Jones would do nicely

Disguising blitzes is very important. If successful, this will really get into Gmac head.

Offense:
1 - Max protect and it's TT, BL, and RR/RS/TH versus the Bama secondary. I really like the size advantage with TT and BL here.
2 - KW out of the backfield on delayed routes.....Saban kryptonite
3 - Spread it out and role it out with a relief valve. If the safety picks up the RB and everyone is covered, JJ runs for 5+.
4 - Every now and then, employ the quick slant with cut blocks along the line. This will slow down the DL and have them second guessing.
5 - Delayed QB draws......old skool style.

Establishing the power running game and option attack is futile.....has been before Bama and they are not the team to try and get it back.

Well said Charles. I agree with everything except abandoning the power running game. Although LSU has not had a lot of success with it, I think LSU must utilize some between the tackle runs to set up play action to take advantage of what I believe to be LSU's biggest edge - LSU's WR's and TE's versus Bama's secondary.

You are spot on about utitilizing KW more as a pass receiver. Due to Saban's penchant for blitzing his LBer's, the middle of the field is often left wide open. Although I think early in the game Saban will hold off on blitzing to see if he can generate a pass rush with just his front four and drop seven in coverage.

Agree with the middle of the field being wide open. Always was a problem when Saban was with LSU. Use Dickson down middle of field.

Also we may look for JJ throwing off that option as he has been running it unusually deep for some reason.

On the replay of Auburn game, the back was wide open out of the backfield. JJ was just intent on throwing it down field.

I do think we will be able to pass on them now that JJ has settled down a little.

Defense:

(1) Tackle, tackle, tackle. All of Ingram's big runs are on broken tackles and LBs whiffing completely. We've been good in this area.

(2) Contain up the middle runs to 5 yards or less. Use LBs to plug the gap.

(3) Protect the perimeter against the outside/off-tackle runs. Use the same scheme as FL and Auburn getting our faster corners in to make the plays rather than relying on LBs. This will force them to the middle of the field. Saban did the exact same to us last year.

(4) Pressure on QB is a no-brainer. McElroy should not be allowed to get in rhythm.

Offense

(1) Come out passing. Don't try and establish the run first - it won't happen. Use pass to setup runs with Scott to keep them honest.

(2) Quick slants to negate their d line speed. Use Dickson more

(3) Don't get cute with Shepard. Line him up as RB and run it to the outside. 8 yards everytime

(4) Use playaction on big plays. Designed shotgun passes are tough with their d line pressure.

Spc Teams

(1) Go for the ball when tackling Arenas. He is the most likely to turn it over.

(2) Take the FGs. Points mean everything on the road

(3) Continue the good work on kick coverage

Charles, I agree with everything, particularly the defensive strategies. Except I do disagree on one thing, but that’s because I am feeling crazy radical, and I know it probably won’t happen.

Instead of going max protect, go four wide. Saban loves to blitz and pressure the QB, and the standard response is to drop guys back to protect the QB. But let’s face it, our o line isn’t very good even if we go to max protect. You’re not buying any additional time. Saban takes the chance his guys can hold man coverage before the QB has to force the ball.

Instead of reacting defensively, attack the weakness of the scheme. Flood the secondary with receivers and you are certain to have safeties on wide receivers. If one of our physical receivers breaks a tackle, there is no help because they are all in the backfield. Accept that we can’t protect JJ and instead practice throwing the ball quickly on short routes to guys in single coverage. Make Bama pay for blitzing.

I don't recall Arenas turning over the ball recently. I think going for the ball could prove to be a costly mistake.
