While his foot was on the rubber, he threw to an unoccupied base as the first baseman was crashing.

If is not delivering to the plate he has to throw it to first base. The first baseman was moving towards home plate in anticipation of the bunt so he could not throw it to first.

It was a balk because he didn’t step off the rubber and didn’t throw to the base.

Earlier TD thread

quote:

The pitcher shall be charged with a balk if, while in contact with the rubber, he throws to a fielder who is either in front of or behind first or third base and obviously not making an attempt at retiring the runner at that base. However, there is no violation if the pitcher throws the ball directly to first or third base in this situation. In this situation, the pitcher didn't throw to the base, because the first baseman was charging. He threw to the charging first baseman, while the pitcher's foot was on the rubber. That was the balk.

So if he took his feet off the rubber before that throw to the charging first baseman it would have been ok

Nope. Watch it again. The 1st baseman had already started to crash down toward home. When the pitcher threw to him, he was a good 10 feed in front of the bag. Ben McDonald explains it pretty well If you catch the highlights.

nothing. that was a team balk. you can't charge as a first basement to simulate a bunt and then receive a throw back from the pitcher. that fricks the runner up too much.

If the pitcher takes his foot off the rubber he can throw it to the centerfielder if he wants to.

Beloso was definitely on first. That makes it occupied

Unoccupied by a defenseman, or unoccupied by a base runner? Ambiguous…

Unoccupied by a defensive player. There was no longer anyone covering the bag.

The term “occupied” refers to whether or not a runner is on the base and has nothing to do with the defense. So yes, the base was occupied and that wasn’t the issue.

Yes, and throwing to him without first stepping off is what resulted in the balk.

Wrong use of words. He has to throw it to a defended base. The first baseman was 15 ft down the line.
Watch the video. The runner knew it was a balk instantly.

My apologies on usinging the incorrect terminology. I was just using the term used by the announcers to help out.
