Somewhat Serious question- have there ever been any made available publicly ? - I’m sure there are no available recordings of the quesrionable calls, but I’m more curious about how the discussions go and what the back and forth is like with Birmingham

Something like this perhaps First Booth review from 70’s

Steve Shaw: “let’s wait at least 45 seconds and confirm the call”
Tom Ritter: “done deal”
SS: “Good job, let’s get on with the REC and comfirm the wire for Monday am”
TR: “got em again, we’re done here fellas let’s go grab a drink”

How does the head of SEC officials end up a Bama grad?

Legitimate question.

According to bama fans the fact that he’s a part of the Tuscaloosa rotary club and a bama grad doesn’t mean he can’t be impartial!

Not sure. Seems like he’d have to graduate college BEFORE landing that gig

I agree - it’s the only way to ensure objectivity and independence in the process. We know the SEC is in Nicks pocket even though every gump denies it. Seems the best way for them to defend their position would be to release some of these and make the process transparent.

In this case Alleva should demand one

A few years ago I spent a bit of time researching the rules for being an official in the SEC. I'm doing this by memory, and this was from maybe 10 years ago or so...but at the time it seemed as though the ONLY rule in place was that an SEC official could not call a game in which his alama mater was playing.

Let that sink in...

It's not that there was a rule in place where member schools could not have working officials doing any of their games...just that an official could not work a game where his own school was playing!

And yet...an official COULD work a game that involved two teams on the same side of the conference where the outcome of the game COULD effect his own team's future. So...an official who is a UF graduate could not work a game involving Florida, but he could work a game between UGA and UT which will have ramifications for Florida.

Which brings us to Steve Shaw...Head of Officials for the SEC. Here we have a man who is the boss of all officials, but who could not actually officiate any games involving Alabama. Which means the head of officials who would be seen as being, by rule, too close to the school to be impartial when it comes to wearing the stripes on the field is allowed to oversee ALL officials, even the ones that are calling a game he could not.

And the other 13 SEC programs are told to shut up and stop complaining about this situation?

Hell...sports fans get righteously upset for simply having commentators who are alumni of certain schools commenting on games because we know, deep down, a guy with ties to a program can and will occasionally let those ties come out.

Steve Shaw may be the epitome of integrity...that's not the issue. the issue is we already have a rule in place that acknowledges, poorly, that officials may very well allow their biases to come out so we don't allow them to call games featuring their own school. why then do we pretend that having a member alumnus running the entire thing is not a problem?

Thanks.

Even if ZERO conspiracy exists...and honestly, given the amount of money, power, prestige and school pride that exists when it comes to big time college football it's hard to imagine that...the fact that the system is so obviously prone to being manipulated ought to be a red flag for everyone involved.

The fact that Alabama fans are so quick to point at anyone daring to suggest that the system, as set up, is prone to abuse, and label them as simply being scared is kind of more telling than anything else.

Sadly, what this situation needs is oversight from a bosy with more power than the SEC.

Kind of reminds me of the final scene in The Untouchables when Costner's Elliot Ness scares the judge into replacing the bought jury with an unbought one and DeNiro's Al Capone loses his shite because he knows he's no longer in control.

It's about time someone came in and switched the fricking jury...

Here endeth the lesson

The position does not require a degree with any prestige. Very little education required. Small words are used and they offer a calculator.
