JJ has played well and is a big reason we are 2-0 right now.
Not it's not. He's very unsure of himself. Checking off from the deep pass, getting happy feet in the pocket, too many passes for negative yards, very inaccurate over 15 yards, 9 times went three-and-out, and only minimal passing yards.
A season is only 12 games long. He's now had 4 starts or roughly 33% of a season. If he's not able to throw downfield by now, hes not going to suddenly develop that skill against Fl or Ga.

Yeah, you kind of have to go vertical when you are running a 2 minute drill.

Except that it is only 2 starts off a fresh year and not exactly the same two starts either - First was a season opener as an away game - the second was first tiger stadium opener as a rainy game.
I think he deserves a mulligan

I agree that the sideline pass was not working at all last night, but later it was said that JJ was checking out of the play called by Crowton . Don't know if it that's true or not, but it sure wasn't working . Wasn't real pleased watching the game, but checking the stats this morning feel a little better . Kind of like golf , would you rather hit the ball well and not score good or score good and not feel like you hit the ball well .

I still think it is Miles that holding this offense back. Crowton's track says that he would be opening the offense up.

that wasn't crowton dam will people ever get it that les is calling that crap just like he did with jimbo. it not right to blame crowton for les's screw up's. miles took over the 3rd quarter that's why we had -23 yards of offense in that quarter. watch the game !!!!!!!!!!

So, you have been on here since Dec of 2003, with 50 something posts, now all of a sudden you are coming out of the wood-work to back Crowton and the play-calling. WOW, just WOW. I am never amazed by members of our so-called "fanbase". Blows my frickin' mind though
no shite.. some of these people kill me.

Crowton is a spread/horizontal guy

They threw two passes and one was a slant to McKnight. I wouldn't describe that as "vertical."
The only vertical pass they threw on the drive was to the TE. That was a nice pass.
Other than that...that drive was all McKnight.

but i also saw a lot of missed blocks on those plays
This ... TT really needs to work on his blocking. On each of those passes to Lafell that lost yardage, it seems that if TT had controlled his man, Lafell would have made good yardage. Kinda explains why TT didn't play as much as everyone would have liked last year.

Go vertical...
Re watch the last drive of the 1st half.
3 of 7 were 'vertical' passes/ pass attempts.
albeit twas a two minute offense.

Oh...my bad....USC completed another pass on that drive to Damien Williams.....
For 8 yards.
I seriously don't know where the OP got the idea that USC utilized a vertical passing attack on the last drive.

Three of JJ's passes completed were for negative yards. With Dickson, TT, Lafell, and Randle (have yet to catch a pass) it defies any football logic not to go vertical.

Thank you.
Perhaps you should coach the team. And also, those plays didn't work because of piss poor blocking by our WR's.

This statement is just great... How can you judge a person's football knowledge by how many post they have.. WOW, great logic, I have been reading this site for a long time and finally joined because i was tired of reading dumb shite like this.. WOW

I really wish I better understood what we are calling insofar as verical passing is concerned and slants over the middle.
We are payig a price for not threatening the deep or vertical throw. I am sure our coaches understand that better than I do andi assume it's b/c 1) they are bringing JJ along slowly and 2)the OL hasn't given JJ a lot of time.
This is VERY different from last yr. when JL's paly selelction included lots of deep, middle and vertical stuff. We asked too much of JL IMO.
Are we just applying the lessons from last yr? If so, I'm ok with it but it's very different.

LAst year all we kept doing was complaining about how the coaches were putting players in position to fail. We blamed Crowton for making JL throw throws he wasnt ready to throw! DO you want that to happen again? Crowton is looking back at last year and is doing exactly what we wanted him to do last year. We are playing a safer more possesion passing game. I mean he is slowly getting Jefferson in, growing him, and as Jefferson grows so will the offense. Give it time, the kid has started all of 4 games. His time will come and what we are doing now will help him later in the season.

I think slants might be an issue given JJ's wind-up. My take is they want to bring him along slowly in order to build his confidence before the meat of the schedule get here. We saw quite a bit of new stuff last night, and will probably see more next week. I'd rather they manage him better than they did Lee last year, and so far they are doing ok with that.
