Not necessarily at me...or from you.
sorry if it sounded that way..I just used the quote repeated by others as well.
and I thought it was a long leap.
I have no respect for Saban-as a person. So far, I have absolutely no reason to have anything but respect for Miles.
They have both done well for LSU-coaching wise.
The BCS has changed the way we look at success.
UR right, we had a nasty period of mediocrity.

Nah, not sold yet. There's got to be something more he can do. Still holding out.
Yeah, Miles needs to start winning every game by 50+ points. It doesn't matter how highly ranked the other team is, it doesn't matter if it's a tough road game, it doesn't matter how we match up, Miles has no excuse to play close games. He needs to win every game by more then 50 points.

quote:He has already accomplished several things that no other LSU coach has. Having 3 11 win seasons in a row, beat several big SEC schools in the same year in multiple years, won back to back BCS lvl bowl games and won 3 Bowl games in a row that doesn't include the Independence bowl to name a few. In addition to winning a NC (only 1 of 3) he already has a place in LSU coaches HOF regardless of what happens from here out.
but he is definitely in the LSU hall...and I think he probably will be the most successful coach to ever stand the sideline of Tiger stadium
That may or may not be true.
only the future will tell. My crystal ball is out of order, glad yours is working.
And for people talking about his recruits, his recruits have already been huge contributors. RJF, Williams, RP, Scott, CJ, Byrd, Lafell amoung many others. I think he has already won with his players.

Finally Saban's players are gone.
Michigan job is filled..
Les will be here for a while.
Either you get behind him and the Tigers,
or your Tiger Bait.

Absolutely...
and I congratulate him and thank him.
I just do not use the word GREAT COACH as some do.
GREATNESS is achieved over a long period of time.
I guess I have seen too many things change over my lifetime.
Now, has he been great for LSU, yes ...I agree.

OK, to sum it all up:
(1) No one would thought Les would have done this well this quickly at LSU, right? Advantage - Les
(2) Compared to recent past coaches (not including Saban) there is no comparison. Advantage - Les
(3) Saban was a great coach here, but lacked in being personable and made mistakes himself (UAB, anyone?). Nearly everyone who worked with Saban has negative things to say about him. Les has a better start as a coach here, makes mistakes too, but he is as genuine in person as he is on TV. It appears everyone who reports to him really loves working for him. Overall Advantage - Les
(4) Saban left LSU for arguably greener-yet unknown (Miami)-pastures on Christmas Eve (Merry Christmas, LA!). Les stayed at LSU even though the greenest, most familiar pasture (Mich) was begging him to come home. Advantage - Les
If you could design the perfect coach for LSU (or for any team), the only thing he could do better than Les has done is to win those 6 games Les lost, go undefeated since he started coaching here, and have 2 more crystal balls in the trophy case. Asking a bit much, huh?

Saban's players
90%+ of the players that played for LSU would have been there regardless of who the coach was. Most are La. kids that wanted to be there anyway, so the whole "Saban's" players thing is stupid. They are LSU's players.

He has continued the successes in recruiting and coach attaction. The DC selection will be HUGE in determining the trajectory from this point forward.
I said that i needed 4 years to judge him, but since everyone will point to the hard road schedule next year, I think it will take 5 years to judge him fully.
He should be able to win 9 regular season games at a minimum with the talent we have returning next year on offense (in particular, while the D looks to be solid also). So successful next year means at least 9 regular season wins and another post season win (either SECCG and/or Bowl).
In 2009, the pond will be ridiculously stocked and the schedule will be very favorable once again, so '09 is the year when we will have enough overall data to fully assess his overall performance. Nothing short of 10 regular season wins and a trip to the SECCG will suffice in '09, so the barometer for '09 is 10 regular season wins + another in either/or the SECCG or Bowl game to make 11 wins.
In summary, he has done a very good job and his style of coaching (executive style) is proving to be able to get the job done at the highest level. He needs a total of 10+ wins in '08 and a total of 11+ wins in '09 to show that this formula is sustainable.
That being said, the '09 11+ win total is my rant backoff criteria, becuase we will have a 5ht year Sr and 2 time starter on RP, plus a plethora of experienced players all over the roster, so i personally would prefer to expect 12+ wins and to be on the short, short list of teams in the hunt for the NC game. Anything short of that will be a personal dissapointment, however, I realize that folks have lower standards for excellence than I do (relative to the tremendous talent we will have on the roster in '09 - which i think will be the best ever for an LSU team)
And I'll save you the Urban Meyer and Richt comparisons for season wins, because it is clearly evident that they were both working with freshman and sophomore contributors in numerous key spots on both sides of the ball, so their issue this year was experience, not coaching. Miles will not experience this issues for the foreseeable future, so that discussion argument is not pertinant.

This photo with Miles and LaFell sums up what kind of coach Miles is.
I think players like playing for him.

Probably not, but is Urban Meyer still considered a "football genius" if in 2006 USC doesn't choke against UCLA?

You bet! Just because you put Ricky Bobby in Jimmie Johnson's car doesn't mean he is still gonna win the race. You still need somebody behind the wheel that knows what he is doing. Miles has proven that to me.
