re: Are we really abandoning the nickel under Chavis?

The reason you need this hybrid olb now is spread offenses will go no huddle and kick your defenses arse without a olb that can cover. You have to be able to play against their scheme without subbing on every situation. This does not mean we will never sub or rotate D-Line. We had major problems with this last year and where caught with our pants down quite a few times.

The problem is neither Shepp nor Coleman are covermen. There is no way Coleman can cover WR's, much less Sheppard.
Maybe Chavis is thinking of situations were there is a third receiver with two backs. Then, you might like to have that extra LB in there; esp. on earlier downs w/ +5 yards to go. In situations like that, if Brooks is comparable to our third/fourth best CB, he could let Coleman slip back and take the SS spot while having Brooks cover that third WR. I don't think Chavis would be in his right mind to suggest that we could stay in a base 4-3 when facing a shotgun offense with 3 or more WR's.
We'll have to wait unitl a couple games or more are played before we will get any firm evidence how the Chief is going use the players. Pre-season specualtion is always fun though.

I think we are going to see more zone.

to be fair to you, malleveto knows a shite ton more than you also

I just hope this year's defense is just less "confused". This might have been Chavis' way of saying he is going to take the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid!) approach.
It seemed like every other play there was at least one defender looking to the sidelines with his arms outstretched and palms facing up...

from everything i've read he's not goin to sub a lot
and yeah the malleveto sub patterns were one of the biggest problems last year
it was HI-larious to watch this against troy's no huddle

Without a doubt! The scheme was essentially the same as previous years. Confusion can easily level the playing field. The coaches were indecisive which led to the players being indecisive.

we played more man than under bo p and it was much more simple generally
but yeah the sub patterns really f'd our guys heads up and the guys have had saban and then bo p coaching them. at some point they realized that malleveto was a joke

In closing (you damn law people have got me thinking in terms of a trial), I feel that Chavis' statement was kind of a simple way of saying to fans that there would be a lot less confusion on defense w/o saying that the previous DC's philosophy was a JOKE.

There are a ton of different ways to defend....
There are people that say "you have to bring in another defensive back when they go to 3 receivers to cover", but Florida and other teams also run out of those formations.
Rantards only remember the 30 yard pass plays, but forget about first down after first down that extends drives...because you can't stop the run.
I'm less concerned about how Chavis defends, and how well this defense pressures the QB and tackles the ball. We need to get back to wrapping up...and gang tackling.

they run with WRs blocking and 180 lb RBs
i'd rather have a S or CB trying to catch jeff demps than sheppard or riley

Without a doubt last years defense was mass confusion. Never saw that at LSU before. Less substitution, everyone knowing what their responsibility is, and knowing what others responsibility is, will make a huge difference.
Hurryup no huddle is one reason the Sooners offense ticked last year. I think UF might try it some this year. Timing and tempo is very important for the defense to get use to and less substitution can only help.

I'd much prefer us to simply have a scheme where at least one defender is already in the area where Demps is running and not being pancaked by a WR. Watching Demps, Rainey and Harvin head for the perimeter where we had a 15 yard gap between a CB being pushed around by a WR and a LB still trying to figure out whether he was supposed to be covering a reciever or blitzing Tebow was just plain ugly.

A defense with a bit of discipline and focus would do wonders for that problem. Relying on finding track stars who can also tackle and read backfields is a way longer shot, imo.

subbing D-LINE =/= to subbing SECONDARY

Just saying is it really much difference between Coleman staying on the field as opposed to what LSU did last year with McCray coming in with the Nickel? Pretty much LSU will run the Nickel as their base defense with Coleman at OLB.

Totally Agree! DL's responsibilities are a whole hell of a lot less complicated than the LBs and DBs.
With our depth at DL, we would be crazy to not rotate DL like we have in the past.
