Here are some key areas and our national rank last year.

LSU 116th in TB%
LSU 15th in kicks out of bounds with a staggering 4 (no onsides kicks) (!)
LSU 113th in average kickoff distance
LSU 44th in avg kickoff return given up (110 in average yards per game because we scored a lot of points)
LSU 128th in average punt return given up (18.91 yards per return)
LSU 82nd in average kickoff return
LSU 47th in average punt return
LSU 49th in FG%
LSU 84th in FG attempts
LSU 60th in PAT% (not a huge deal because we missed one, but we haven't had a clean PAT season since 2012)
LSU no kicks or punts blocked (haven't blocked a kick since 2013)

Where are we going to be better this year? New punter, so we could improve there. The other specialists are probably the same. I guess we're hoping BDP becomes a kicker whisperer? I hope we can get back to covering kicks effectively. We absolutely have to be better on special teams this year.

Based on the stats, it looks like our strength on special teams last year was kicking the ball off out of bounds.

Also, I haven't researched it to confirm, but I think we were called for a block in the back/hold in every game last year.

Update, no penalty on a return against State. No penalty on a return against Florida, but we made up for it by fumbling a punt and letting them return a punt for a touchdown. No penalty on a return against Aggy, but a 15 yard punt when we tried to ice the game. No blunder against Texas Tech, other than kicking the ball to the 30 every time on kickoff.

I'm going to lose my shite when I see a short kick in the air to the 20 yard line.

This is actually a very good post and points out a huge deficiency in last years team that I haven't heard or read hardly anything about this off-season. I knew we weren't good on ST last year but I didnt realize just how SUCK we were! We can be great on Offense and Defense but if we don't improve our ST's play it will cost us a game (or two), especially when playing the upper tier programs in the second half of the season and hopefully SECCG and or the Playoffs!!

They should be improved. Guice returning KO's will help. No Kheen shankapotamus. The worst part of last year was kicking the ball out of bounds on the kickoff. Let Gamble put it in the endzone and quit trying to pin a team deep. You pin teams deep on punts, not kickoffs.

Poor special teams play killed our momentum several times last year. It will be absolutely vital to our success this year. Les has balls letting Peveto possibly decide his future employment.

LSU signed a kicker and punter in the c/o '15, so I would say yes.

Regarding coverage, lets all pray the answer is yes.

I'm drooling now just realizing Devin White will probably be The man coming down the field for ST.

If LSU wins the toss, the 1st melt of the season will be the kickoff not reaching the goal line. Book it.

Rightfully so. Especially if the KR brings it out to the 35.

I'll be honest, if we kick the ball to the 30 every time against Wisconsin like we did against Texas Tech, I'll melt like the Nazis that opened the Ark of the Covenenat.

We've recruited some athletic linebacker types that we've been sorely missing on ST

You are only allowed so many coaches that can recruit. BDP's specialty is recruiting. Special teams did improve by the end of the season.
