re: Anyone surprised LSU offense played better than LSU’s defense and special teams?

Our yards per play were nearly identical, 5.2 (LSU), 5.5(FSU), those are both very low and ours increased by a lot the final 3 drives. So our D held FSU to what would’ve been the 11th ranked offense in YPP for an SEC team last year and they were the problem? Our offense Saturday would’ve ranked 13th and that’s only due to a huge bump late in the game.

This low scoring affair was not due to LSU’s defense, it was because FSU ate up the clock limiting LSU’s possessions.

LSU- 8 possessions
FSU- 9 possessions
LSU- 7-13 conversion rate
FSU- 8-13 conversion rate
The difference was failing to convert scoring opportunities and a lack of threat in the passing game. LSU averaged 5.8 yards per pass compared to FSUs 7.9.

The defense failed to stop them on third down, allowing that to happen. Even if you attribute that to FSU stalling, the point still remains that LSU gave up too many points per possession forcing the other phases of the game to outperform to overcome it.

The other phases underperformed by every metric.

The key here is the combination with the third down conversion rates in your other post. FSU was actually 11-17, which is ridiculously good. The defense holding them to only 5.5 yards per play didn’t mean much when they kept allowing them to convert. If your point is that they can clean that up going forward, I am hopeful. It doesn’t change the quality of the performance in this game.

They were 11-18, 61%, in reality you count 4th down attempts, and we were 7-13, 54% plus we had more first downs than FSU, 25-22. So not a big difference and again you continue to dismiss certain stats while using only stats that support your narrative. 5.5 yards per play is low, you say it doesn’t mean anything while you also ignore our 5.2 yards per play which is extremely low then say our offense over-performed. Your argument is just completely agenda driven.

The statistics you are choosing are generally useful for their predictive capabilities, but they are not particularly relevant for judging game performance. You don’t get any bonus points for making a team take 15 plays to drive 75 yards to score a TD compared to allowing them to go 75 yards in 3 plays. What matters is how many points you surrender per drive. The same is true on offense. LSU didn’t have any big plays, but they were successful in moving methodically down the field. 3 TDs in 7 drives and 5 times in the red zone out of 7 with no turnovers is very efficient whether it took 5 plays to get there or 15. I’m not sure what agenda you think I have other than a realistic evaluation that is data driven, not based on stylistic considerations like so many others on here seem to be.
