Steve Shaw's coming out of retirement.

where did you find these numbers?

You need to compare LSU's penalties with Ritter against Ritter's average with other teams. Not our average with Ritter compared to other Refs

Who knows? All we know, and this has been documented, is that LSU's negative margin of penalties and penalty yardage when Ritter's crew officiates our games is more than triple what it is when any other crew does.
I keep hearing this on the rant, but has anyone look to see if his crew has triple the penalty yardage of other teams too? Maybe they are 3 times more likely to throw the flag, but do it consistently in all games they ref?

I'm sure it won't matter, TLDR, etc but I write a lblog pre and post game. I do not care for Ritter's CREW but he is very professional. Rarely does HE throw a flag but has to enforce them. I did a ten year study regarding Alambama - LSU games and will present it to you. I am NOT trying to justify Tom Ritter or ANY crew. Fire Away:
"First off, I will talk about LSU games back to 2005. These are the Alabama games in which everyone seems to think involves a conspiracy. I will say that coaches agree that if an official’s call beats you there can probably be a half-dozen or more coaching “errors” that affected the outcome more than one call. Yes, a late game judgment call can sometimes be hard to swallow but if you are honest and look back there are plenty of times LSU got the “breaks”.
I will make a little chart to show the results.
YEAR SCORE REFEREE PENALTIES
2005 16-13 Matt Austin 6-7 (6 LSU – 7 Bama)
2006 28-14 Hubert Owens 5-7
2007 41-34 Tom Ritter 14-2
2008 27-21 Penn Wagers 2-5
2009 15-24 Tom Ritter 8-4
2010 24-21 Matt Austin 3-5
2011 9-6 Tom Ritter 7-6
2011 0-21 Scott Novak 1-5 (Big 12)
2012 12-21 Hubert Owens 1-7
2013 17-38 Matt Austin 7-4
2014 13-20 Tom Ritter 3-2
What do you see as a constant if any? To begin, Scott Novak was a Big 12 referee assigned as a process of the NCAA’s selection committee for bowl games. He is now a side judge in the NFL as well. Alabama’s 5 penalties to LSU’s 1 was a moot point. LSU didn’t do enough in that game to draw a flag or anything else"

You're not reading the stat right. The MARGIN (meaning the difference between our penalties and our opponents') is three times worse. If I remember the data correctly, though, they do call fewer penalties on our opponents than other crews call on our opponents, which would seem to defeat the argument that they are just flag happy for everybody.

A blogger did the research and someone linked the blog on TR after the Syracuse game.
quote:
The average SEC ref flags LSU 6.86 times for 56.63 yards. Ritter flags LSU an average of 10.14 times for 81.86 yards.
And keep in mind that the "average" includes the Ritter crew's extreme outlier numbers, which greatly skew the average. Averaging among all LSU games officiated by SEC crews in the last four years, LSU has the worst margin of penalties and penalty yardage of any team in the SEC. With games officiated by Ritter's crew excluded from the calculation, LSU's average becomes middle of the pack in the SEC.
Oh, and he also found that, in addition to being an extreme and solitary outlier in terms of the margin of penalties and penalty yardage against LSU, Ritter's crew is also the SEC's favorite crew to assign to LSU games. The SEC has assigned his crew to more LSU games in the last four years than any other crew, and only one other crew is anywhere close to the same number. The crew with which LSU has its best margin (an actual positive margin) has been assigned to the fewest LSU games of any SEC officiating crew. These numbers are all based on the last four years, which was as far as the blogger went back.

Let's see if some highlighting will help. I'll highlight all the games on the list in which LSU was called for more penalties than Alabama, and let's see if there's a pattern:
quote:
YEAR SCORE REFEREE PENALTIES
2005 16-13 Matt Austin 6-7 (6 LSU – 7 Bama)
2006 28-14 Hubert Owens 5-7
2007 41-34 Tom Ritter 14-2
2008 27-21 Penn Wagers 2-5
2009 15-24 Tom Ritter 8-4
2010 24-21 Matt Austin 3-5
2011 9-6 Tom Ritter 7-6
2011 0-21 Scott Novak 1-5 (Big 12)
2012 12-21 Hubert Owens 1-7
2013 17-38 Matt Austin 7-4
2014 13-20 Tom Ritter 3-2
Does it seem like there's a pattern?
If you look at only the 10 games on the list that were officiated by SEC refs (which excludes the NC game), you see that the penalty margin was in each team's favor five times out of the ten. Four of the five times it was in Alabama's favor, guess which crew worked the game.

ing that he has a personal agenda against LSU?
I don't know, but it is strange his crew throws 4 more flags a game against LSU than any other crew.

What's even worse is the play after the PP7 no int call. That was on 3rd and 6. Bama punts--flag--running into the kicker. 5 yard penalty....first down bama.
