The roommate let them into the apartment. He then went into his own room. At this point, no crime has been committed.
Thomas allegedly "broke" into Anderson's room. One or more of them went into the room, and Thomas allegedly walked out with some items. It would seem that the charges arise from these actions.

It could be inferred with some certainty from the Advocate article that they did not break in to the apartment itself.
The roommate was there, he would have heard them attempting to break in, but only comes out of his room when he hears them trying to enter his roommate's bedroom? That wouldn't make sense.
Now, it certainly is possible that the main door wasn't locked and that's how they gained access, but the article says they entered the apartment, and then broke into the room.
So it wouldn't be rumor that they were allowed in, more of a plausible interpretation of events.

they ENTERED the apartment doesnt mean they were allowed in. It just means they didnt break down a door to get in. They waited a few minutes to start with the destruction of property.
No worries though, this will all come out in the wash.
