I’m sure Penn is a fine human being. Great interview. Comes from a prestigious high school in DeMatha

But my word, yesterday was an ugly reminder that he is just not an SEC LB

1-on-1 missed tackle against JWill in the hole

Chasing Mason Taylor’s shirttail on an out route the very next play — this is more forgivable as that’s not what he should be in for

Then on Kaleb Jackson’s TD run he overpersues and gets knocked into the same gap as Perk allowing 28 to coast into the end zone for a 30 yard TD run.

/end rant

Everyone keeps saying coaching, and comparing Damone clark and his transition he made with baker, will have our def and guys like penn turn the corner.

The difference is Greg penn isnt built like, nor does he have the athleticism clark had. Clark his fr and soph yr had like 3-4 sacks coming on in 2-3rd team reps as a jack rusher.

His first mlb yr was horrible, but he's much more athletic then penn is, and coaching added on top of his natural athleticism with another yr.

Doing a quick rewatch of just the plays for the bama game at home we won in ot, penn accounted for around 13-15 8+ yard plays, by himself. He single handedly was the reason they were in the game.

I dont get how coaches don't see weeks making instant impact plays left and right, and penn is still the answer, even last season. Hopefully we see guys like weeks, mcbryde, kylan, reliford a ton all yr.

If penn can't fill or tackle in a gap, or cover.. if sage looks lost every game, if burns can't cover or tackle in the box, if savion loses contain every snap.... need to let young guys play.

DEF has a whole is missing that hard-hitting, physical presence and swagger. It starts up front and sadly we just don't seem to have those players. CBK & staff need to judiciously work the portal to add the right players. Expecting more shootouts this season.

Somebody said it in another thread and I agree. I think this was the last shot for older guys so the staff could say they gave them every opportunity.

I think you see us start moving away from guys like Sage and Penn going forward.

And the problem with that missed tackle is that wasn’t even competitive. He didn’t even slow jwill down.

He is too slow for the SEC. I don't care how physical he is in drills. He is not an SEC linebacker.

Yeah that 1 on 1 missed tackle gave me PTSD from this past season.

This is the hand Kelly decided to roll with... it is what it is unless he steals a proven starting LB and Interior Defensive lineman from another team whose production can translate to the SEC.

It starts in the inside. It doesn't matter how you try to dress it up or single out a particular linebacker, they will all struggle behind a bad defensive line. Going out and grabbing a few warm bodies thats 6'3 305lb+ doesn't solve our issues. We gotta get somebody in the middle thats disruptive and demands attention.

We better hope McKinley can be productive in year 1 because Shone Washington and the 6th year kid from Wisconsin will not be the answer.

He’s learning with competent coaching. Much better potential than Omar Speights

Only part that sucks is that Sage wasn't playing his natural position where Penn was. Obviously his ability is capped and clearly the guys behind him are better or look that way.

No doubt he has more potential since speights was even more limited athletically.

Issue I have is they said he got his body right and was down 15 lbs last season... and he was just as slow come game time. Some guys just play slow... and feel like sage and penn are those guys. Their already not burners... and bc mental side doesn't seem to be instinctual, them reacting to everything makes them even slower.

Compared him to a Kevin minter who I'm sure didn't run faster then a 4.7 40... but he just read and flew to every right spot and put dudes down. Maybe baker can get his instincts to improve , with thinking less if the def feels more as one unit. I hope so and hope he shuts all of us up, he, sage and burns. Be nice for some loyal tigers to grow and become real players. Just hope we're quicker to flash young talent this yr.. since have bit more in the cupboard now, if it doesn't work out with them.

What is Sage's natural position at this point? Feels like the staff has bent over backwards to continue to try and find ways to use him and he does nothing but underperform at each one.

Jardin Gilbert looked really bad on both of these plays as well. The middle of our defense has some work to do

It's the spring game. Maybe they they've seen enough of the others in spring and wanted to give Penn one more run to see what he could do "under the lights"

Dumas-Johnson 100%

Not a high draft pick guy, but a very good college inside LB

He’s what the coaching staff hopes Penn can be

14:37 mark of the first quarter

So I’m guessing the very first official play of the scrimmage
