This is an annual feature from Athlon Sports. They interview coaches off the record to get their opinions on various topics.

Game Five: @ Ole Miss Rebels
"The first program in the league that went all-in on portal players to take them to a playoff bid went bust. Now what? [Austin] Simmons is talented but unpolished, and it's going to take some time to develop him. They're one of the best programs in the country at evaluating the portal, and they've done a very good job integrating that talent and winning right away, but this is still an inconsistent program. The loss at Florida last year is an example of why [Lane] Kiffin isn't considered an elite coach. They could be just as talented on defense and maybe bring Simmons along quickly, but they're still a step removed from the top-end programs. With the level of competition in this league, it's hard to see a roster like this one immediately come in and secure a playoff bid."

UF was looking solid toward the end of the season. Losing to them isn’t as embarrassing as it was early in the season

It was when you consider Lagway was still pretty banged up.

Hmmmm. Anonymous? Probably a good thing. Give me your negative thoughts and I’ll keep who you are hidden.
The good ole days; when coaches were loaded with negative thoughts and misgivings about their opponents,…… but kept them to themselves.

LK is not considered an elite coach because of his refusal to take points or play safe when necessary. He had two opportunities to take field goals against lsu which would’ve won the game. He refused to do so. He did the same thing in the Kentucky loss. He continues to “rely on the analytics“ , with zero understanding of the analytical application to his situation. His analytics come from a data population of all fourth down situations. But if the game is on the line, do you choose the situation that wins the game 66% of the time or 100% of the time? In key SEC matchups , points are at a premium. This is especially true when the game is NOT a scoring contest. His 2024 games between LSU and UK were clearly field position and defensive battles where any in all points we’re going to make a difference.
The one thing I will say about Les Miles is that as incompetent as he was relative to offensive scheme, he really did have a great feel for situational football and the “ storyline” of a game as it progressed. He knew which games were going to be field position battles, which required points. He knew which games had become physical slugfests at the end, with the ability to identify when his offensive line had the upper hand. He leveraged this many times in key fourth down situations. He also knew when the contest was even in matchup, strengths, and momentum at key juncture of the game which could be flipped in an instant by a trick play. LK has none of this, which is shocking considering how adept he is at play calling.

quote:Disagree. It was the second most embarrassing loss of the season for Kelly. Kelly would have to at least get to a natty before I could feel confident in him.

Can you go to a school on our schedule to see what they're saying about LSU?

Are you asking if Athlon’s article had content on other coaches anonymous comments about LSU? If so, Egg’s thread has that here. But if you’re asking about ability to select a specific team/coach and see the comments made about LSU, then youre probably SOL IMO. I don’t see how/why Athlon labels it as anonymous if the comment is associated with the source of it.

Going on record to say Clemson DL will dominate LSU OL and wins by double digits. 27-13.

Solid take. Agree about Kiffin. He does get way too "cute" more often than not. Reminds me of Nutt at Arkansas. Could beat anyone, with Jones/McFadden, then lose to Vanderbilt the next week or so.

So the anonymous coach thinks that Arch Manning is the best OB in the league and Lagway could compete to be the best. Interesting.
