Tigers checking in at #7

quote:

7. LSU (8): The Tigers did beat Tennessee and Kentucky, so I’m sure their fans will hammer me for putting them below both. But the loss at home to Florida was a deal-breaker, at least for now.

I still can’t believe how flat and lame LSU came out for the Florida game. Hopefully Will Wade hammered that into their brains before Wednesday.

No doubt. Looking forward to a big bounce back against them Wednesday night.

We need to win out and right the wrong that was that loss to UF.

That was a very frustrating game to watch.

Florida is not as bad as their record.
They played some of their best ball vs LSU.
It happens.
This week the Tigers can even the score.

Honestly, this is fair.

Can't lose at home to Arkansas and Florida. That looks bad.

Win out and we'll keep climbing.

I think even most casual fans saw this one coming. The style of play for UF and the timing. It was waiting to happen.

I just love how recency bias somehow outweighs the past. So we're being punished for a home loss to Florida, but Kentucky lost at home to Alabama, who LSU just swept. Alabama and Florida are both bubble teams.

What am I missing?

Edit- They actually lost on the road to Alabama, not at home. Still, it's strange that he singles out the Florida loss as the difference.

There it is, that's what I was missing.

If only Andy Katz had included the Arkansas loss, his comment might have made some sense.

We have a non conference lost to Oklahoma state. Kentucky and Tennessee have non conferences loses to duke and Kansas

Fair enough. The good news is that we get a shot at revenge Wednesday.

In retrospect, it appears that Waters received a concussion in the first half of that game that affected his performance the rest of the game.

Right, but he only mentioned Florida. Kentucky lost to Alabama, and LSU swept them on top of beating Kentucky.

I found his reasoning to be odd. If he had included the losses to Arkansas and Oklahoma State, it would have made more sense. But he made it sound like losing to Florida was THE difference. He said it was the deal breaker, for now.

Just a weird argument on his part.

Agreed. Florida is a good team, but inconsistent. Tennessee had to go to overtime to beat Vandy, who is the worst team in the conference. As you said, UK lost to Alabama.

LSU also beat Tennessee without our best player.

when you've got as many teams as there are in the NCAA its a pretty inexact science ranking them. There aren't many degrees of separation in this 1-15 range, so most of the arguments made will have holes in it because its really just coming down to personal preference.

now yeah singling out the UF loss is an odd thing to make your point of contention. If he said "hey this teams tends to play with fire a lot" I'd probably get that more.

Yeah, and they weren't much better the second time they faced them either.

True, indeed. People quickly forget or dismiss that. Duke loses Zion and they lose two of three. LSU goes 2-0 without Waters, and beats the number 5 team.

Hitting 3 consecutive 3s in OT after going 8-28 up to that point was pure luck on their part.

Oh, of course. I can let some things slide when there are a lot of similar teams, because, as you said, it's not an exact science.

It's just arguments like the one Katz made, when it seems there were far better one's he could have made, or a team like Michigan State still being ahead of LSU in the AP poll, despite three really bad losses. Those kinds of things are what I get hung up on a bit.
