This is one of those things that’s so simple, that coaches try to change it up, again to be cute. Acting like they know more than everyone else. I coached for about 20 seasons on multiple levels, you see this shite all the time, guys changing up the most elementary techniques to act like they know more. It’s obvious that these players didn’t know what to do.

Maybe but Taylor may of panicked also and blocked the wrong guy.

Great (and nauseating) analysis.

Say what you want about the guy but we never did anything this inept under O.

We had a great special teams guy in McMahon, who Woodward should have made sure had the opportunity to stay if he wanted. Same with Moffitt. We gave Kelly WAY too much control.

OK I am no expert but it looks as if from the side the holder is closer to the lineman than normal. Is there a standard of yards from the lineman to the holder. Just looked very close. Is this the holders responsibility to find the right spot?

Some kickers shorten their approach on short field goals. Would have helped
exactly. It's only a 20 yarder. A kicker could probably take a little half step and kick it 30 yards or so.

Or, like another poster suggested, have the holder back up a yard or two for short FGs.

Twice in one game. No adjustments. Poor coaching. We lose.

The first block came from the middle. The second came from the outside. Two totally different reasons the blocks were made.

You have 9 guys to block 11 and you are taught in field goal protection to block inside out. For whatever reason the wing tried to get the wrong guy.

Perhaps

Now do the count on D…Clemson overloaded center of line whereas FSU out-manned the wings. If outmanned, block guy with shortest distance to the tee.

Alignment mattered but FSU scheme and LSU decision on who to block mattered more on that play.

Timing of snap and kicker foot to ball…did not review. Curious if speed to kick was factor too.

Man, I know this wasn’t even considered, but a fake fg and short pass to left end would have sealed it.

Or, if you just don't massively frick up a simple blocking scheme that has been done the same way for fifty plus years and assuming the kicker doesn't whiff by trying something silly like a half step approach, the kick is not blocked 100% of the time.

Fake field goal would have destroyed them on this play.

Good stuff. It’s very clear in the picture that he should have been leaning further forward. Standing like that when the d lineman gets a running start is a recipe to get blown up. I agree it’s terrible coaching. Not even being in a proper stance on the most important play of the game is a coaching failure. If it was one player then maybe we could blame the player. But it’s on both sides so it’s very obvious this isn’t being corrected by the staff.

It does not look in the picture that he was blocking the outside man.

Except he was. He tried to punch the inside guy then stepped up to the outside guy. Kicker has already kicked the ball so the outside guy wouldn't have been close.

No one was over center from FSU. They instead over loaded one side.

I would have panicked too.

Yep. He tried to punch one and the other got through to block it. If he steps down he hits both of those guys and we're going to OT.

He picked the wrong guy to block. You should block the inside rusher and realistically just a push off with the hand on the outside defender should give you the time to make the kick… block in on inside rusher and push outside defender with left hand.
