Any list has to include Tommy Casanova as a DB and/or Kick returner. Realize most on TD were born well after his playing days, but growing up in my teens, he was by far the most gifted football player in all of college football.

Ranking players to an all-time team is near imposable, I would suggest stating the following to get an idea to who should be ranked on an all-time team:

Players should first rank by decades as follows:
1893-1900
1901-1910
1911-1920
1921-1930
1931-1940
1941-1950
1951-1960
1961-1970
1971-1980
1981-1990
1991-2000
2001-2010
2011-2020
2021- now

I will tell you the two weakest decades are 1893-1900 and 1921-1930.

The best early player at LSU is hands down Doc Fenton.

There are a few that stand head and shoulders above the rest, Joe is a good example of this type.

Once you get a good all decade team list, then check position by position and see who should move to the 1/4 century type teams:

1893-1920
1921-1950
1951-1980
1981-2010
2011-today

Then do a final list best player.

There are only a few names that should make everyone's list on the final team.

There really no wrong pick (ok there could be some bad ones, example placing Tommy at S or FS when he player CB at LSU all 3 years.)

I know many do not know the early players, few know the 1930's and 40's.

From the 50's on there are many that know the players.

Yes, Billy Cannon ran a 9.4 100-yard dash.

Had he not got hurt in the pros no telling how good he could have been at rb.

This is before the training athletes do today.

Billy had a little training at Alvin's and Istrouma and he is not the first player or players at Istrouma to get this training, my father played on the 48-49 teams and trained at Alvin's place all year.

Istrouma had the first weightlifting program in a high school, and LSU the first college.

Why? Says who? What if there are better players than them that played for us?

Most of the players you've listed are on my 'team.' But it's difficult to assess players one never saw play (or rarely so) against those in the "ESPN" era where you can watch every play over-n-over.

I tend to give consideration/preference to latter era players, those who played four years, and their pro-football careers.

If another wants to weight their choices relative to the era they played in, then I have no quibble. If someone includes Cannon, Casanova, Capone on theirs, they just viewed they errand differently than I did.

The thought of what leonard fournette would do running behind that oline is frightening. Unstoppable.

A 9.4 100 yard time converts to a 10.28 100 Meter time. Matthew Boling of Georgia ran a 10.18 at this year's NCAA finals and finished 6th.

I'd say a 10.28 is possible for BC, although I'm guessing it was hand-timed so who knows. He was BIGGER and FASTER and STRONGER than the RBs of his era. There is no argument on that.

Breaking them down:
Billy Cannon speed range is 9.4 100, not a cutter type rb, a leader due to his outstanding abilities at the time. Played in the Iron man football of the 1950's, rb, s type. So naturally looks slow on film because of the time on the field (1st team played a lot of minutes in 57-58-59).

Another positive: is Ole Miss still crys as he would have been an Ole Miss player had his father not moved to Baton Rouge for a job. Had he been on the 57-58-59 Ole Miss team, they likely would have not lost a game.

Tommy Casanova best CB at LSU from the per 1980's, Fast could cover very well on an island. He is LSU's only 3 time All American for a reason, played hurt his last season at LSU. Just say when you talk all-time greats at LSU his name is in that very elite 8-11 players. Hands down a legend like Cannon.

Personal note I got his autograph in my Bible in 1970.

Jerry Stovall one of the best persons you will ever meet in your life, a little on the slow side speed wise. Should have won the Heisman his sr. year, did not win because of the huge number of players in the south in the running for the Heisman that year.

Is he one of the best 11 in LSU history, not really. This is coming from a person that loves Jerry Stovall and nonmentioned him into the college football hall of fame. Could I put him on the first team All time LSU team, No.

LSU has been blessed with some many great Safety and Free Safety types and that is the spot you would have to place Jerry on the team and Jerry was another do all type player. He would go on to a fine pro carrier and better still is his work with the youths and his love for LSU.

Human nature. Nothing against BC. As time goes on and details fade, and verification becomes more obscure, we take the opportunity to put a fresh coat of embellishment on them and turn them into super-heroes so we can trade fond stories around the campfire/dinner table. In this case, about -1/10 second every once in a while. Watching the Halloween run - even in real time in full gear - it certainly doesn't appear he'd be capable of 9.4/100yd. That said, still the greatest in Tiger folklore.

It's pretty well-attested that Cannon ran sub-10s 100 yd dashes. He clocked a 9.9s to win the SEC 100 yd track championship. This isn't folklore at any level.

I might also note he may be the only Tiger ever to have:
Scored a rushing TD
Receive a TD pass
Throw a TD pass
Return a KO for a TD
Return a punt for a TD
Kick a PAT
Punt
Intercept a pass (he played both ways).

Yes, Cannon was timed at 9.9 when he won the 100 yards at the SEC track meet.

You understand the temperature that night and 100% Humidity and that Cannon is play both ways though most of the game?

I know many players by that point in the game were gassed. I have the game notes of one of papers best sports writers which match the stories told by people I know that were at the game. My father's stories of the game matches' Dan notes word for word.

Recover a fumble needs to be added to your list of accomplishments by Billy Cannon.

Just Note, someone thought enough of Stovall his number 21 is hung up in the stadium with #20 & #37. He really could do it all, like Cannon.
