I was always a Pap fan and there were many people in 2016/2017 on here that were questioning why he was the everyday catcher because of his bat.

What he did great was that you knew every time he went up to the plate you were getting a good at bat even if he didn’t hit well all the time. He saw a lot of pitches worked a lot of walks.

If you have a dude on his skill level defensively that’s all you need from him at the plate.

Ryan jorgensen was prob better defensively, but thats a long time ago. The rest of the options between pap and milazzo and gibbs are close

The milazzo brainwash is real, and is almost impossible to reverse at this point

Paps & Gibbs were absolute stud defensive college catchers

Kade was also solid as a rock & would actually give a little on him vs Alex. But he was so much better overall

Are you trying to say that Milazzo, pap and Gibbs are all close defensively?

To me, yes. They are.

Id actually throw scivique in there too. If you went strictly by numbers, i think kade had a better fielding percentage. Obviously thats a flawed stat. But he had like 2-3 errors his 2 years here and threw out i think 50ish percent of runners. He is prob the most underrated lsu catcher ever….especially when you add in his offense

I would trade Alex Milazzo for Kade Scivique every day of the week. I’ll agree there.

But he’s the only catcher we’ve had in recent memory who could both hit and be a great defensive catcher at the same time.

But he wasn’t as good as Milazzo defensively. Neither was Gibbs.

Pap comes close and may even be Milazzo’s equal defensively.

The great catchers in LSU history were really good to elite on one side and at least not a liability on the other. That’s all I ask for in a catcher.

Milazzo is a liability at the plate. McManus/Travinski were a liability defensively.

Kade is the best catcher I’ve seen at LSU since I’ve known what I was watching. He’s not underrated to me.

From what I remember Gibbs isn’t Milazzo defensively. Pap was.

Don’t get me wrong I’ll take all three of those guys today over Milazzo.

But there so much a catcher does that doesnt go on that stat sheet, its all a part of the equation. Catchers that block better, present a better target, framing pitches, handle pitchers better. Its hard to remember how good some of those were at those things, ill admit.

I’ll admit Gibbs and anything before him is a blind spot for me. I remember them playing but I was way more interested in other things in my younger days. But starting with Scivique, Pap is the only catcher that comes close to Milazzo defensively.

That’s not to say they were worse overall catchers because they weren’t. I’m just talking about defense right now.

Gibbs was the best game manager they’ve had back there this century imo

Infield defense was much more detrimental to W/L’s. Extra outs hurt more than a passed ball.

have absolutely no idea how people could have watched our situation defensively at catcher after Milazzo got hurt and make a comment like this. It tells me you probably didn't watch a whole lot of the season.
I'm not taking about all of the mishaps behind the plate this season. The worst one was throwing a ball on a steal to 2nd right at the pitcher who had to catch it to keep the ball from hitting him. I've watched alot , in fact every single game. Milazzo's defensive skills are not in question and has never been in question.

Ok this is way I see someone who is your catcher. He is your "battery" he is your best player, he is a strong part up the middle, he has excellent defensive skills, hit for a decent average and can jack. Are these types catchers in h.s. all but gone these days? At least that's what I look for in a catcher.

I seem to remember Gibbs would struggle on bases stolen though. Didn't teams like to steal on him because of his arm or am I thinking of someone else?

I’ll take Millazo batting 4x a game over a poor defensive catcher who will have to receive 130 pitches a game. The catcher can cost us more runs than a decent hitting catcher will produce. Alex’s defensive WAR will be much higher than any other catchers offensive WAR over his.

I don’t think anybody short of Dylan Crews has a position with his name on it.
Maybe an idea, but if Tommy White comes to fall ball and can’t touch a Ty Floyd fastball during any scrimmage, I’d venture to say he wouldn’t start game 1. That won’t happen, but point being these names y’all are listing are dependent upon fall production.
Joe Blow may show up as a 1/20th scholly player from middle of no where Louisiana and hit 30 home runs in the fall or suddenly find a breaking ball/change up nobody can touch.
Nobody is written in stone.

Milazzo was so bad offensively CPM was making him bunt with 1 out in regional games. You say offense doesn’t matter for a catcher, but it seems like the moment finds those guys and you end up having them come up in situations that they need to hit in constantly. If Milazzo was to return back to a .135 hitter like he was 2 years ago, I would much prefer him being a defensive replacement late in games with the better offensive catcher playing early.
