what was a B-52 doing at 5000 over campus

At my request. Knocking out some "low level" training after our primary jet broke and we had to go to the spare aircraft and accomplish an alternate mission profile.

Yep, all we have left are H models. Primarily at Barksdale and Minot, but there are 2 out at Edwards AFB, CA for developmental test.

Thanks. I'm an old fart who retired in 1986. Still work for the USAF as a DOD contractor. We operate, maintain, and sustain the Air Force Satellite Control Network for the 50th Space Wing at Schriever. We also provide O&M for the four GPS stations. You couldn't get there without us.

Or your Navigator would have to break out his slide rule.

AF Vet myself...didn't stay to retire. Left as E-6 in 1996. Sometimes regret not sticking it out.

Considering I'm a Navigator, I'm going to "brag" for a minute and say I could get there without GPS. Would it make it tougher? You bet. I could still get it done though.

Thanks for your service too!

great pictures....and from a plane that's probably much older than you are!!!!!

questions for the group, take a look at the southeast corner, i don't remember seeing that in the drawings, or am i starting to have senior moments?

that doesn't look like it will go around the entire addition?

Last B-52H rolled off the assembly line in Wichita, KS in September 1962. We celebrated the 50th birthday of that jet last year. So yes, they are all older than me.

Further proof that I'm an old fart. Yes, I'm a few years older than the early versions of the BUFF. Hell of an airframe to last as long as it has. And thank goodness I was never stationed at Why Not Minot.

heard some horror stories about mixing models from a BUFF guy i worked with on the joint staff....forget whether it was F's and G's or G's and H's....

something about one model having a water injected engine and you had to watch takeoff interval....

G models had water injection to provide extra thrust. H models do not because their engines have enough thrust of their own. The issue was when a G model would have an issue with their water injection and would have to execute a high-speed abort when the H model was already closing on it. This was exacerbated by using 12 second takeoff intervals back in the day; not much room for error. We now have a minimum of 30 second spacing even though all are H models and don't have to worry about the water problem.
